HomeMy WebLinkAbout061624 Landowner support for Dabob Bay Natural Area expansionALERT: BE CAUTIOUS This email originated outside the organization. Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. I am a private landowner on the Toandos Peninsula and I am writing to express my support for DNR's proposed expansion of the Dabob Bay Natural Area. Additionally, I am in favor of the inclusion of the "West Dabob Parcel"—an area that was in the original request from Jefferson County—in order to protect murrelet habitat and forest connectivity to the existing Natural Area. Efforts to preserve and restore wild salmon and wildlife habitat in Tarboo Creek and Tarboo-Dabob Bay, one of the few remaining intact lowland stream and estuary systems in Puget Sound, have been underway since 2002. Many diverse groups, including the Jefferson Land Trust, the Department of Natural Resources, Trust for Public Land, local conservation-minded landowners, the federal government, Jefferson County, and the US Navy have cooperated to preserve—and in some cases restore—lands surrounding Dabob Bay. In 2009, after much study and public input, the state expanded an existing designated ‘Natural Area’ around the shoreline of Dabob Bay, while also establishing a Natural Resources Conservation Area in the uplands above the Bay. This conservation status is a powerful assurance that the clean waters and mature forest habitat that makes up much of the watershed can continue to thrive for generations to come. This current expansion is our opportunity to continue that effort and make our children and grandchildren proud of our good stewardship of this unique part of Hood Canal.
