Today, June 20, Senate bill S. 2581, which would provide funding for Secure Rural Schools (SRS), is up to be "hotlined," or fast-tracked in the U.S. Senate. This means an item can pass
under unanimous consent – but with just one objection, the legislation will not advance.

Fiscal Year 2025. It was last authorized for three years under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021. Counties are budgeting now and need to take SRS into account.
What is Secure Rural Schools (SRS)?
Established in 2000, Secure Rural Schools was created to support rural counties where timber harvests were diminishing and the revenue sharing of timber receipts was no longer sufficient
to adequately sustain schools and communities. Counties cannot collect a property tax on U.S. Forest Service land, and SRS was created to fill that need.
What does the funding support?
Counties rely on SRS payments to provide numerous critical services including infrastructure, conservation projects, search and rescue missions, and fire prevention. Additionally, certain
funds under SRS may be used for broadband access in schools.
What happens if SRS is not funded?
If Congress fails to renew its long-standing federal obligation to forest counties and provide a long-term solution for revenue sharing, counties across the U.S. would face steep budgetary
shortfalls. The last time authorization for SRS lapsed, in 2016, federal forest payments to counties decreased by more than 80 percent on average.
