As someone whose family relied on food stamps for a time when I was young, I know the struggles families can face to keep food on the table. It’s great that when kids are in school in
Washington state, they have access to free and reduced-priced lunch. But when school is out, far too many kids spend their summer worrying about their next meal. But this summer, that’s
going to change.

Now, in participating states, including Washington, families whose kids qualify for free or reduced-price school meals will receive a pre-loaded nutrition benefits card worth about
$120 per child in “SUN Bucks.” SUN Bucks can be used to buy groceries over the summer—like fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy, bread, and snacks. This will make a big difference in
helping more kids get the good, nutritious food they need when school is out—and at least half a million children in Washington state are going to benefit from this new program. The
Summer EBT program is based on my Stop Child Summer Hunger Act that I first introduced in 2014 and I finally got it passed into law in December 2022—and this summer it will go into
effect for the first time.
How to Enroll
Families already enrolled in benefits like SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR will automatically be enrolled in the Summer EBT program.

by calling the SUN Bucks Contact Center at 1-833-543-3230 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (PST) Monday - Friday.
Where can you use SUN Bucks?

Do SUN Bucks Expire?
All Summer EBT benefits expire 122 days after they’re issued, so make sure you use them! Unlike SNAP EBT, these benefits expire whether or not you use them—so you should use your SUN
Bucks before other nutrition benefits.
