When someone new hears about CRAB, they often assume we work in the seafood industry. For those a bit more familiar with the County Road Administration Board, they usually know us for our funding and grant programs. What many are often surprised to hear is that CRAB is more than a funding agency, a lot more. In fact, our statute outlines a myriad of duties our agency is responsible for, including, advising “counties on issues relating to county roads and the safe and efficient movement of people and goods over county roads.” In practice, we here at CRAB carry this responsibility out with county engineer trainings, by providing mentorship and technical expertise to our public works departments, and through keeping abreast of the latest trends and policy in the world of transportation. In May and June, we had cohorts of a dozen county public works professionals on site for our three-day county engineer training. Our skilled staff of Drew Woods, Derek Pohle, Mike Clark and Steve Johnson covered the A-Zs of the role of the county engineer, and how that role relates to the County Road Administration Board. We hear over and over from those who have taken this training how invaluable it is to their learning and growth as a public works professional. And many don’t just take the training once, they come back throughout their career for a refresher.
