WSF Weekly Media Highlights As we head into the busy Fourth of July week, we are communicating to customers <https://wsdot.wa.gov/about/news/2024/track-state-ferries-real-time-using-mobile-app-navigate-july-fourth-travel-rush> and media on what to expect. Increased Vashon Passenger-Only Service (Seattle Times story attached) Possible Clinton/Mukilteo Service Reduction (South Whidbey Record story attached) Major Issues of the Week Huge thanks to Everett Ship Repair for compressing their schedule, working with WSF’s Vessels team to ensure the Suquamish was repaired and ready for sea trials this weekend. With that work complete, WSF’s Operations/Dispatch team worked over the weekend to crew a tow from Everett Ship Repair to our Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility that started late Saturday night, a second crew to conduct sea trials early Sunday morning, and a third to move the boat from Eagle Harbor to Clinton/Mukilteo, allowing us to maintain important vehicle capacity ahead of this week’s busy holiday travel. WSF staff are working hard to ensure reliable service over the holiday week. However, with six of seven routes downsized either by number of vessels (Fauntleroy/Southworth/Vashon “Triangle, Bremerton/Seattle, Port Townsend/Coupeville), or vehicle capacity (Bainbridge/Seattle, Edmonds/Kingston, Clinton/Mukilteo), and only a 64-vehicle vessel available for service relief, there will be service impacts if a vessel comes out of service for repairs. We appreciate our employees who are working over the holiday to get their neighbors to where they need to go and hope customers will take time to express appreciation for their work. With vehicle line-cutting a problem around our system, and currently our number one customer complaint, we’ve placed a VMS (variable message sign) at the Mukilteo terminal where line cutting is a significant issue. The message reminds passengers it’s illegal to linecut and if witnessed by law enforcement, they may face a $145 fine and direction to go to the end of the line. This places WSF terminal employees at every terminal in a challenging position, but without enforcement authority, they are instructed not to address line cutting. Service Reliability* For the week of June 24-30, systemwide service reliability was 99%. Last week we cancelled 28 of 2829 scheduled sailings, none of which were replaced. Of the 28 cancellations, 57% (16) were due to crewing, 21% (6) for schedule resets (when a boat is so far behind schedule, we cancel a sailing to get it back on schedule, providing predictability for customers), 24% (6) were due to low tides, and 2% (1) for security reasons. For the second week in a row, there were no cancellations due to vessel maintenance. *For WSF, “reliability” refers to a scheduled sailing taking places, not on-time-performance. We understand for the public a significantly late sailing isn’t “reliable,” but we also share on-time-performance data <https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/wsferries/viz/WSF-Public/Index> for transparency on both metrics. Vessel Availability We’re operating at our 15-vessel current service level, operating a third “bonus” boat on the Triangle route, with unscheduled operations focused on keeping the other two boats on the route on schedule. We’ll operate the third boat weekdays, for one watch, when we have the vessel and crewing availability to do so. Customer feedback to the addition has been overwhelming positive, although with comments they wish it could be all day and on weekends. New Vessels and Jumbo Mark II Conversions New Vessels – We have released the first part of an Invitation For Bid, allowing us to begin prequalifying shipyards, moving to selecting a shipyard(s) by the end of the year. We are still scheduled to deliver two boats in 2028. Hybrid Conversions – Work continues on the Wenatchee, the first Jumbo Mark II vessel undergoing its long-planned midlife propulsion upgrade. That work includes on-going coordination with the shipyard on when the conversion will be completed and when the vessel will be ready to return to service.
