Consider something a tribal counterpart in New Mexico told me last month: At first, I wasn’t sure if I was going to work with you. I needed to see what kind of person you are. I needed to see if you would listen to me with your heart and with your spirit. Maybe you’ve encountered something similar in your work? Transparency, Trust and Progress Feedback like this is a powerful reminder of what’s always important. A reminder that transparency and trust are still big challenges in tribal relations. A common reason: Too often, tribal counterparts don’t have much sense of who we are as people. Just regular people… Not job titles or professional personas. Not roles, goals, or expertise. Just human beings. The Forgotten Cornerstone It’s easy to forget: Interpersonal relationships are the cornerstone of effective tribal relations. Without rapport, it’s hard to develop consistency, credibility, and trust over time. This requires authenticity. That begins with story, and our third Why. It helps us give people a sense of who we are at the personal level. It transforms the tone of our interactions. This, in turn, yields relational insights that advance our work with tribes. But first, we should review our first two Whys… 1) Our Organizational Why is about alignment and expectations. It answers the common question: “Why is your organization engaging with us?” It’s the clear, honest story we share about why our organization is trying to work with a Tribe. We use it to: * Signal potential alignment with a Tribe’s priorities; * Shed a light on process—how our organization works, and * Identify things we can’t control that impact our working relationship. 2) Our Professional Why is a little different—it’s about our credibility. It’s the story we share about how we, as professionals, value our work with a tribe. We use it to: * Align ourselves with our tribal counterpart’s interests and roles; * Add transparency and consistency in our interactions, and * Separate ourselves from organizational constraints we can’t control. Taking Off Our Hats—The Third Why Our third Why is often most important: Our Personal Why. It’s the story that transcends the others. It’s where we drop our guard. Where we step beyond the comfort and safety of our institutional and professional identities—our various ‘Hats.’ We use it to: * Build interpersonal rapport with counterparts; * Help others identify with us as humans, not just as professionals, and * Add authenticity and connection to our relationships. Consider some real examples… Last week, a right-of-way professional in Long Beach shared the following in a group: I stumbled into this job after a career as a teacher, and a mother. It’s still really important for me that each day I’m as helpful as I can be to all the people I encounter, no matter what’s going on in my company. I just try to leave that internal stuff behind in my talks with the Tribe, and stay focused on what’s most helpful, and what they’re saying. Last month, I shared the following in an interview with a tribal counterpart in Albuquerque: I have to thank you personally. Years ago, I struggled a lot after seeing intense human suffering—violence, human trafficking, and tragedy targeting children in three reservations. It impacted me permanently. But you should know, the work you do, the things you shared, it helped me with these heavy things. Just listening has been healing. Thank you. Whether big or small, light or heavy, our Personal Why transcends. To See and Be Seen: Toward Authenticity Our personal why should answer questions like: * “What kind of person are you?” * “What kind of path are you on?” Or… simpler questions like: * “What is important to you?” * “Why is it important?” Vulnerability is authentic. It’s credible. It’s real. It doesn’t have to be all heavy either… Last year, I worked with a group of federal fire, forestry, and fisheries folks in the northern Rockies. After I asked them to share something they valued about working with tribes, I was astounded! Each person described genuine connections they feel to very specific places. Whether their love for nature, their fascination with species, or their passions for outdoor experiences… They each shared how working with tribes enriched these aspects of their lives because of the special knowledge tribes share with them. But there’s more… a lot more. Authenticity Transforms: Big Results Over Time Over time, these federal folks did big historic things with tribes—from sensitive collaboration and consultation to formalized working agreements: * Streamlined tribal consultation on NAGPRA, NEPA & NHPA; * Meeting quarterly at the staff-to-staff level to coordinate projects; * Protecting sacred sites during fire and flood emergencies; * Being trusted with sacred, secret cultural data, and * Managing ecosystems through negotiated partnerships. There are so many other great examples like this around the country—hopefully something you’re witnessing in your work too! When our tribal counterparts have a sense of who we are as people, a lot can change. Big things become possible. Next: Identifying What, When, and How… Take some time to brainstorm five things about your personal history that add value to your work with Tribes. Anything counts—big things or small. As long as it’s sincere, authentic, and relevant. Next: Identify when and how to share these with tribal counterparts.
