What is a railroad crossing? Simply, it is an intersection where a railroad track crosses a road, pedestrian path, and/or bicycle path at the same grade. This federal grant opportunity
(aka “NOFO”) may be of interest if you have one of these crossings in your jurisdiction.
This is a combined NOFO for FY23 and FY24 and provides a total of $1.15 billion in funding across the country. Just over $38 million is set aside for planning projects, and the Federal
Railroad Administration (FRA) indicates they are specifically focused on planning projects seeking to advance one or more grade separations. In addition, $229 million is set aside for
projects in rural or tribal lands, and $11 million of that is for counties with fewer than 20 residents per square miles.
Applications are due September 23, 2024.

GoRail also recently hosted a webinar on RCE for local and state officials. Over 500 attendees heard from the Federal Railroad Administration about the program, including useful application
best practices. We also featured a helpful case study of a successful grant recipient from the first round of funding in the Village of Franklin Park, Illinois; including local and
