The City is writing this letter to ask for your assistance in maintaining your street frontage as the City no longer mows vegetation in the public right of way on behalf of property owners. Historically, over one-third of all city street crew time has been spent on right of way vegetation management. This is highly unusual for a city environment as property owners are typically responsible for maintenance of vegetation along their street frontage. The vast majority of Port Townsend property owners already perform this work. In an effort to dedicate more staff time to preservation and repair of streets, all property owners are required to mow and maintain their own right of way consistent with City Code. Working with the Parks, Recreation, Trees, and Trails Advisory Board and City Council, the City has already changed maintenance practices by reducing mowing to only street frontage of City owned parcels. While the City has published this change in our monthly newsletter; City staff recognizes that not all property owners receive or read the newsletter. Thus, this letter serves as a notification to let property owners know their responsibility for right of way maintenance. Attached is a right of way maintenance brochure, which is also available online at www.cityofpt.us under the "Community"heading and titled"Right-of-Way Maintenance Requirements."This brochure reflects the requirements outlined in the City Code for maintenance of the right of way. The City requests that mowing be performed as soon as possible and not later than 30 days from the date of this letter. Please take care in these dry conditions to mow in the morning or when there is ambient moisture to reduce the risk of inadvertent lire. Thank you for your help. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists all benefit from having tall grass and brush mowed back from the edge of pavement as outlined in the brochure.
