Jefferson County Parks & Rec received full funding for Phase 2 <https://jumpplayground.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=026fe9cf2f2bf19fe17821626&id=73a15f90df&e=86e960d295> of the playground from the Dan Thompson Memorial grant. <https://jumpplayground.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=026fe9cf2f2bf19fe17821626&id=66772c9cc5&e=86e960d295> This grant is administered through the Washington State DDC (Developmental Disabilities Council) <https://jumpplayground.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=026fe9cf2f2bf19fe17821626&id=4981c772fb&e=86e960d295> . Initial expectations were to receive a determination in early March. March - April 2024: Delays in response from the Dan Thompson grant resulted in JUMP! continuing our fundraising and looking at other grant opportunities in case we did not receive the Dan Thompson grant. Board Member and Pickleball player, Kim Rafferty organized a PTPC - Port Townsend Pickleball Club <https://jumpplayground.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=026fe9cf2f2bf19fe17821626&id=e4873bb4e0&e= 86e960d295> fundraiser for the month of March. Thanks to her efforts and the support of the PTPC, JUMP! received $2500! Board President, Sarah Grossman assisted Jefferson County Parks & Rec Director, Matt Tyler with submission of another grant application to the Washington state RCO (Recreation Conservation Office) <https://jumpplayground.us18.list-manage.com/track/click?u=026fe9cf2f2bf19fe17821626&id=5f93b4390e&e=86e960d295> which was due May 1st. The RCO awarded JUMP! $500,000 in 2022 for Phase 1 of the playground. May 2024: Good news came from the Dan Thompson grant that JUMP! Phase 2 would be fully funded to complete the playground!!! The RCO grant application was rescinded. June 2024: The County has been awaiting the contract from the Dan Thompson grant committee since receiving the news of the award. The contract just arrived on 7/22/24. Now that the grant contract has been received, the County will proceed with: * Legal Review of the Contract (2-3 weeks estimated time) * After review, it then goes to the BOCC (Board of County Commissioners - TENTATIVELY hoping for August 12th mtg). * BOCC signs-off. * County Parks & Rec reviews playground equipment order with JUMP! and places order (6-8 wk for delivery). * JUMP! notifies Gunter Reimnitz that funds are available to fabricate and install the Art Gate. * Groundbreaking TBD by County dependent on delivery of equipment, County Public Works and Playground Vendor schedule and weather. * Celebration for Completion of the JUMP! playground TBD after the playground is fully completed! And what about the Orcas?! The Orcas get to 135 degrees and hotter on partly sunny 65-degree days! Jefferson County Public Works conducted research last year to see how to best deal with this hazardous issue. They found that shade seems to be the best at reducing the temperatures. They have been in discussion with the manufacturer and supplier to see if they will shoulder some of the cost of installing a shade structure over the Orcas so they can be used year-round in the playground. Public works has also been budgeted some money from the County to address this issue. The current plan is to install a large triangular shade structure over the Orcas that will tie into the large shade over the Sea Snail Plaza and the shades over the new play area. This work will be done in conjunction with installation of Phase 2 to save time, money and inconvenience to playground users. <https://mcusercontent.com/026fe9cf2f2bf19fe17821626/images/85b7be9f-7b66-e106-4b50-9890f861a011.jpeg> This is one option being considered for shade over the playground.
