The bald eagle is still listed as a threatened species in Washington. The protection ofnestin&
roo~ and foraging habitats are critiqal in order to remove the bald eagle from the threatened
species status in the state. The primary' threats to bald eagles in Washington today are habitat
degradation and human disturhlince dut to a mpidly expanding human population in the
Northwest. The Bald Eagle ProtectiOlllules C'N AC 232-12-292) and the enabling legislation
(R.ew 71.12.655) were enacted in 19" to provide some means of protection fur important bald -
eagle habitat in nesting territories as weB as significant roosting and foraging 8ICaS. These rules
direct dte Washington Department ofFish and Wildlife (WDFW) to develop site specific
management plans to protect importantleagle habitat components that may be impacted by land
use changes.
