Counties Sue Washington Over Decision to Keep Sentenced Juveniles in Local Jails
The Washington State Association of Counties is suing the state over its decision to suspend intakes at two juvenile detention centers and house newly convicted youth in county jails
due to overcrowding.
The association, which represents all 39 of Washington’s counties, is asking King County Superior Court to reverse the intake suspension. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday and lists 13
county governments as plaintiffs, including Pierce, Clark, Spokane, Snohomish and Thurston Counties.
“[The state’s] decision not only risks the safety of our youth in the justice system but also transfers the state’s current overcrowding and safety issues directly to counties,” Derek
Young, the association’s interim executive director, said in a statement.

Judge Upholds Decision to Return 43 Adult Inmates to Green Hill School
A Thurston County judge has again ordered that the 43 “young adults” removed from Green Hill School earlier this month must be returned to the facility, despite objections from state
officials. The decision comes as the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) looks to address overcrowding and safety concerns at youth detention facilities in the state.

Spokane County to Join Imminent Lawsuit Over Shortage of Space in State Juvenile Detention Facilities
Spokane County is prepared to sue the state of Washington, alleging failure to properly detain and rehabilitate juvenile offenders. The county commissioners held a special meeting Monday
and decided to join a Washington State Association of Counties lawsuit aimed at recouping the money spent by counties to house juvenile defenders – a responsibility that’s fallen on
the local governments after the state stopped accepting minors and young adults earlier this month due to overcrowded facilities.
