Peter Geerlofs, M. D., Health Officer CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND REPRESENTATIVE: Sheila Westerman The meeting was called to order at the appointed time by Chairman B.G. Brown. The following Board and staff members were present: Commissioner Larry Dennison; Administrator Kathy Stafford; Acting Director of Nursing Nancy Gow and Environmental Health Specialist Linda Atkins. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Commissioner to approve the minutes of September 18, Chairman B.G. Brown seconded the motion, commissioner George Brown. The motion carried Larry Dennison moved 1990 as presented. in the absence of by a unanimous vote. '- Health Board Minutes - October 16, 1990 Page: 2 Solid Waste Permit - Port Townsend Pacer: (see August 21, 1990 minutes) Dick D'Agostino, Manager and Mark McCrary, Senior chemical Engineer were present to represent Port Townsend Paper company. Port Townsend Paper Company has decided not to appeal the decision of the Hearings Board. This Hearings Board decision stated the permit for an inert waste disposal facility issued to them by Jefferson county was not appropriate, because the material they wanted to dispose of was not inert. The County will issue a temporary permit and the Port Townsend Paper Company will begin the permit process again at the local level. ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT School Contracts: Kath~ StaffOr? submitted the annual contracts for professional nurs1ng serV1ces with the Queets Clearwater School District, the Port Townsend School District and the Brinnon School District. There were no changes since last year except the dates. Chairman B.G. Brown said that these contracts will be put on the county Commissioners' agenda as soon as possible. Remote Control vision Tester: arrived. The funding for this tester soroptomists. The new vision tester has is being donated by the CODier Purchase: The Health Department's copier lease will be expiring in the next few months. They were given the option to buy the copier for an additional $153.57. Kathy Stafford explained that they have a request for a new copier in the budget for next year because the old copier doesn't fit their needs anymore, but there may be another department that could use it. commissioner Dennison moved that they purchase the residual on the copier and Chairman B.G. Brown seconded the motion which passed by a unanimous vote. Flu Shots for Countv Em~lovees: The Health Department has given free flu shots to county employees in the past and they have had requests to do it again this year. Kathy Stafford explained the Health Department employees volunteer their time to give the shots. The Board concurred that the employees should receive free flu shots if they want them. Health Board Minutes - October 16, 1990 Page: 3 DIRECTOR OF NURSING REPORT Giardia: Nancy Gow reported that in six months have been about 20 confirmed cases of Giardia in the county. will be looking over the statistics and the locations of outbreaks to try to find the source. there They these Flu Shot Clinics: The demand for flu shots has risen dramatically over the past three years. It is projected that about 1,500 shots may be given this year, as compared to less than 800 in 1988. This has added to the workload of every available nurse. DIRECTOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH REPORT Clandestine Drua Labs: Linda Atkins, Environmental Health Specialist was present to discuss the Environmental Health Report. She explained that the Health Department was not notified of a recent drug raid. Under HB2906 they are required to post the property with warning signs, notify the owner and determine if the property is contaminated from tests run by the DOE and DEA. It is also their responsibility to prohibit the use of the property until it has been decontaminated, at which time they authorize the reuse. In the future they will be working closer with the Sheriff's office in these situations. * * * * * * * The next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 1990.
