Dear Sir: I wa® very much diea,ppointed that I would not have your company on the Trip to Quileene this morning. .Burns called up and said.:'that he was in trouble with the west piers on account of water. -After looking over the work I do not feel that there is anything difficult in getting these footings to the required depth, and I ehowed.~~amn® how to do it in a systematic manner, A I am sending a 4a Centrifugal pump from here and expect to get a gasoline engine :from Richard- son near the bridge.. The pier on the east side gimmes promise of a rock footing,- in fact the rock is .now in the up et ream excavation and we will have to shoot out-some of it to ,get a proper base. I fear that 2 will not be able to get down there again for some time, but I think the work will gc: along now in good shape. TY~e intent and purposes of these specifications and the plans accompanying the same is to secure a complete structure in all its details in accordance therewith. SUPEP~~TRUCTURE. Superstructure shall consist cf one riveted steel truss Span 9U feet center to Centex of end bearing with a clear roadway of 16 feet, with ~ood:~f3oot-::system and concrete pier$~ all as in- dicated and described on the accompanying general plans and strain diagram and as further described bpi these specifications, The contractor sY.all prepare such detail shop plans ae are necessary for the proper performance of the work in the shop and field and shall submit the sa~:~~e to the engineer in charge for ap- proval. Drift pins shall only be used in bringing together the several parts forming a built member and must not be driven with such force as tc upset or destroy the metal around the holes. The internal diameter of the die used in punching shall not exceed tr~e nominal diameter of the rivet by more than 1/16 of an inch. In reamed work the internal diameter of the die used in punching shall be at least 3i1~ inch lees than the finished hole. No punching will be allowed in material thicker than 7/'~ of an inch. ;. A11 burrs and inequalities shall be removed before assem- tiling the pieces of any riveted member, so that the surface may come in close contact. All truss members ccntaining field joints srxall 'ae tempor- arily fitted together at the shop for reaming. Stiff chords, shall be assembled in the shop for a length of not le~~ than four panels. Built members wrlen finished must be straight and true and free from twists, kinks, buckles and open joints between component pieces. All abutting surfaces of ccmpression membersv~ere the joints are fully spliced, must be faced, so as to come to an even bearing after the mer~:ber is fully riveted up, and such euxfaces shall be in close contact throughout. Rivets must be driven by direct acting power, riveters, whenever .possible, and t~~ey shall campletely fill the holes, have full heads concentric with the holes and in close contact with the ~ ,. surface; heads of rivets of same diameter must be taniform.- Counter sinking must be neatly done., Counter sunk rivets must completely fill the holes. No stored material shall be allow- ed to rest on the ground or in tivater and without proper skids.. Aber the erection of the structure the contractor shall rerr~ove all falsework and staging, and clear up ail debris, leaving the site in as good condition as he found it. The erection shall be done in a first class and workr~am-~ like manner. All Jfield bolts shall be of full size and of the best quality of material. All turned bolts shall fit the holes ~;~ith a driving fit. Field bolts shall have button heads except for floox beams and other unexposed connections. The contractor shall be required to clean all rusty raterial and give it twc coats of paint as specified and accepta'ole to the en- gineer. After the erection is completed the contractor stall paint the entire structure with one final coat of paint, of a quality satis- factoxy to the engineer. The contractor shall remove the old bridge which shall be- come his property. Foundations piles must be of live, sound timber, from ten to fifteen inched butt diameter drrven to .refusal. Piling will be paid for per lineal foot of p le ~ under the hammex. The abutments or piers shall be placed with reference to bed of stxeam on foundations as indicated on the drawings except that ex- cavations need not be carried more than six inches into solid rock. Concrete rr~ay be deaosited vender water provided a closed chute or trer~ie is employed and the proportions increased to une cement, two of sand and four of stave. Concrete shall be composed of Portland Cement, sand and broken stone or gaavel. Cerc~ent stall be Portland Cement of good quality. Each package srlall bear the name of the manufacturer and the brand.
