The cement used in this work shall be hydraulic Portland cement of uniform quality and of rer.ognized standard brand. ~ The cement used shall be subject to the tests aid specifications a.s prescribed by the American Society for 'hest in© tat erials . SAND. The sand used shall be cleanest, if necessary it shall be thor- oughly washed until it is free from loam, clay or earthy particles. Uni- formly fine sand for concrete of any kind may be rejected, sand to be used in any mortar, wearing surface, topping or facing, shall be screened. GFA.VEL. The gravel used in any concrete shall be free from loam, clay or earthy particles,, the gravel may ra,r~~e in size from ~ ~ inch to 2 inches ir_ diameter. The gravel must be so graded that the voids will not exceed 40~. +" SURTNG. Sand and gravel shall be measured loose in boxed of suffi- c~ent size to contair_ ttie requisite quant~,ty of each aggregate used in batch nixing, said boxed must be ~aproved by the ~;ngirleer. The sub--grade of the walk shall be thoroughly tamped, rolled or other- wise thoraughly compacted. No concrete walk shall be constructed upon any fill unless the Engirneer sh«11 consider .the same sufficiently settled to afford firm foundation. Where pockets of unsuitable material are encountered the same shall be excavated and refilled with suitable ma- terial and tamped at the e}~:ense of the contractor. The contractor shall provide forms not less than ~+ inches in ~.epth, surfaced on orie side and one edge perfectly straight, such forms and sub-grade shall be thoroughly wetted immediately befare pla.c~ng the concrete. Upon the foundation as hereinbefore specified for trie walk is to be laid a concrete base consistirg of concrete spread over the whole space to be filled, thoroughly rammed into a solid mass not less than 3~ inches thick. Upon the concrete base as soon ~.s it is tamped and before it ~ gets the initial set there shall be laid a wearing surface of ~ inch deep consisting of 1 part cement to 1 part sand, the sand and cement shall be thoroughly mixed until a uniform color is obtained. The wearing surface is to be floated to a uniform surface u,nd brou~;h#, to the grade of the sidewalk, free from any depressions, hollow tops or other imperfections, no patcYiin~--; of any kind is to be done. After the wearing surface has been floated it shall be given a brush finish, eV° shaped grooves ~ inch deep shall be made with a suitable tool dividing the side- walk into blocks as shown on the plans in detai$~ The sub-base shall be cut through every six feet acid the e~:pansiori joints be placed as shown on the plans. The joints shall be thoroughly cleaned and ~- inchx~elt expansion material shall be used. Concrete curb shall be built a.s shown on the plans a.zid details herewith. Concrete for curb and first course shall be composed of 1 part cement , 3 parts sand and 6 part s gravel.
