Hosted by the Mercer Island YFS Foundation, the event provided residents with a firsthand look at the latest developments in YFS food assistance, including a tour of the truck and information on accessing food resources. The event featured a fun and engaging Bingo game designed to highlight the realities of hunger in our region and the new YFS/Hopelink partnership. Participants also had the opportunity to ask a lot of questions in order to get a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those dealing with food insecurity and find out how to get involved. Overall, community change grants totaling $325 million were distributed to 21 different applicants nationwide, and Gonzaga was the only entity to receive one in Washington. However, more money could come to the region later, as nearly $2 billion was allocated for the program. Using the grant money, Gonzaga's plan is to install electric heat pumps in low income homes, create a Community Climate Action Fund to help groups working on climate-resilience projects, and update community centers so they can provide support during extreme weather events, such as sweltering heat or polluting wildfire smoke. HEAT PUMPS AND MORE The funding Gonzaga's Climate Institute received will jumpstart the Spokane Climate Resilience Project, which Henning says will build up the city's infrastructure to help those most affected by extreme heat and wildfire smoke. Decorated with donated items, her balcony abloom with colorful flowers and plants, Hayes calls the place her "little piece of paradise." Hayes' lease states the $1,300 rent was a special offer and would increase after 6 months. She was aware of that but not concerned because she says the Bellingham Housing Authority told her she would only have to pay the equivalent of one-third of her income. Hayes is disabled with back and heart issues and lives off her monthly $940 social security check. The event focused on encouraging innovation, building partnerships, and sharing best practices. One central area of focus is the distinction between poverty and neglect. The Biden-Harris administration demanded that children should not be separated from their families solely due to financial hardship. States like Kentucky, Indiana, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Kansas have already clarified that poverty should not be a reason for child removal. Thanks to outdated charity tax laws, the U.S. is missing out on hundreds of billions of dollars that could flow toward housing and food security, health research, education, advocacy, and other crucial nonprofit efforts aimed at uplifting the common good—but simple reforms could unlock some of the extreme wealth that is currently "warehoused" in private foundations and donor-advised funds. This introductory circle will bring participants into the heart space by inviting us to tell our own stories, to listen deeply to the stories of others by finding common ground, and to embrace our common humanity when we see ourselves in the perceived other. When this occurs, we build the trust that is necessary for courageous dialogue and the transformation of hearts and minds that shows up in what we say and do. This building model alternates between group conversation and one-on-one dyads, aiming to offer a deeper practice than usual. Racial Healing Circles satisfy the unrecognized need of communal healing and shared liberation. The event which will take place on Monday, Oct. 21 at Meydenbauer Center in downtown Bellevue and stream online, shares the powerful, real-life stories of north and east King County residents who have partnered with Hopelink in their journeys to exit poverty. Renowned author Stephanie Land will take the stage with keynote remarks. "Poverty is so complex. With only an hour-long event, it’s important to us that our guests come away with a stronger understanding of the systemic factors keeping people in poverty, as well as the strength and resilience we see every day as people build the tools to exit poverty," said Meghan Altimore, Hopelink Chief Operating Officer. "Stephanie Land has so powerfully illustrated this duality in her writing over the years. We’re thrilled to have her as our keynote speaker."
