After Counties Sue, WA Agrees to Readmit Juveniles into Detention
More than a month after suspending intakes to its two juvenile detention centers amid an overcrowding crisis, the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families began readmitting
sentenced juveniles Friday after a dozen counties took legal action.
The Washington State Association of Counties and Pierce, Clark, Cowlitz, Douglas, Grant, Lewis, Skagit, Snohomish, Spokane, Stevens, Thurston, Walla Walla and Yakima counties, filed
a lawsuit last week in King County Superior Court alleging DCYF was failing in its obligation and violating state law by suspending intakes. That violation, they argued, denied young
people rehabilitation and impeded public safety throughout the counties.

Longtime Tri-Cities Defense Leader Leaving. "Courts Can’t Handle What’s Coming."
One of the more prominent critics of the Washington State Bar Association’s changes to public defense is leaving because he believes they’ve set the system on a path to financial disaster.
Larry Zeigler, 78, has headed the Franklin County Office of Public Defense since it was created eight years ago after splitting off from a joint office with Benton County.

Annual Event Aims to End Stigma Around Drug Addiction, Prevention

County Council Adopts Ordinances to Increase Housing Supply
The Snohomish County Council voted 5-0 Wednesday to adopt four ordinances focused on increasing the available supply of housing and addressing housing affordability challenges. The suite

3 Wildfires in the Pacific Northwest Likely to Continue Burning Until Fall
Three wildfires in the Pacific Northwest are expected to continue burning into the fall, according to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). While firefighters are actively working on the Pioneer
Fire, the Miners Complex Fires and the Moss Mountain Fire, all three are likely to continue to burn until significant rain or snowfall arrives in the region.
For the next few months, crews will focus on maintaining containment lines to protect critical areas like communities, powerlines, water supply systems and natural and cultural resources,
according to USFS.
