serve as stark reminders of how important it is to be prepared for emergencies.
Our Community Survey successfully closed August 1st after accepting responses for over 3 months; we had over 950 individuals participate! We have a presentation event in the works so
be sure to check the save the date below. On behalf of the network, I would like to extend a big thank you to all the people and business who contributed, the results will help us advocate
for the housing our community wants and needs — we aim to make articles like ‘No Where to Go <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=eea614c5

If you’re itching to fill out more surveys, see the Community Bulletin section for important ones from OlyCAP <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e

late to join the Short Term Rental discussion which you can learn more about in this issue, including an interesting opinion piece perspective in the Media Consumption section.
Finally, as an organization focused on housing, I would be remiss not to share that HSN has new home! We will always remember our micro office fondly, but If you ever visited us there,
you know how exciting this is. Keep reading to learn more.

Mark your calendars, call your babysitter, reschedule your band practice — We will be presenting our findings October 16th! Spots will be limited, but don’t worry if you can’t make it,
we’ll make all the presentation materials publicly available.
We launched our Community Survey with three questions in mind:
* What is the urgency of housing needs?
* What housing characteristics do community members want in relation to affordability?
* How do housing constraints impact the local economy?
We are actively sifting through the data looking for answers to these questions and other helpful information. As a sneak peek, can you guess the top three highest ranked ‘essential
housing qualities’? Open space, pets and laundry: sounds like a foundation for happiness to me.

Short Term rentals, amirite? You either love them, hate them, or at least dread your next family reunion at one. There's a lot of nuance that comes with STRs and we hear ya! Over the
course of the last five months, HSN has been following the JeffCo conversation, hosted by the Dept. of Community Development, and listening to your concerns.
* Many neighbors are frustrated at the noise, traffic, and disregard from STRs guests and absentee owners.
* Some are investors looking for the next hotspot. Other locals want to showoff everything JeffCo has to offer to visitors and guests.
* Some worry that without their STR they won't be able to make their own mortgage.
While we don't have all of the solutions, we hope you take a chance to read through our Short Term regulation proposal <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad260
8f9c4e51e6660&id=e6e598d182&e=cbc38cef46> and share your thoughts with JeffCo DCD and our Planning Commissioners <mailto:PlanComm@co.jefferson.wa.us?subject=Short%20Term%20Rental%20Regulations&body=
> . Help us make STRs amendable to all.

Meet & Greet Recap
Primary ballots are in, but that’s not the last you’ll see of these two candidates as both advance to the general election in November. As a 501c3 HSN cannot endorse political candidates,
but we do endorse getting out and voting 💪; this November let’s shoot for 90%+ voter turnout like we did in 2020!
Here’s some of what we heard from our County Commissioner Candidate Meet & Greets:
Heather Dudley-Nolette:
* Experience: As Bayside Housing & Services Deputy Director, Heather has experience developing and expanding affordable housing options. Bayside is currently working to add to add 150+
units of housing to the county.
* Short Term Rentals: Heather discussed capping the number of short-term rentals (AirBNBs) suggesting limits based on area size and population, but also noted she sees the value of them
as a source of family income.
* Working Families: She spoke about connecting with families where they are, looking for new ways to hear from folks who are often left out of the conversation.
* New Solutions: One resource for new solutions Heather pointed to was the Affordability Toolkit from the Housing Development Consortium from which she noted multiple examples of other
communities trying new methods to bring down costs.
Ben Thomas:
* Experience: As Port Townsend City Councilmember, Ben pushed for changes like removing parking restrictions allowing ADUs to be built where a driveway might have gone, and doubled the
number of ADUs allowed per lot in the city. Ben also sits on the Urban Growth Area advisory council, where he focuses on safe conditions over excessive permitting.
* Long Term Rentals: Ben also helped pass an ordinance for longer notice for rent increases to protect tenants.
* New Solutions: Ben referenced ideas from Strong Towns, in particular up-zoning all residential areas to the next level from where they are currently to encourage greater density.
* Aligning Regulations: Ben aims to bring the regulations changes at the city like removing parking restrictions and allowing more ADUS to the county in order to progressively add new
dwellings.

HSN has a new home! We have moved from our little uptown office out to Glen Cove. You can find us at 63 Julian St, in the building shared with Edensaw’s CNC machines — really, it’s a
nice spot and we are excited to be out in the county. We don't have regular office hours set yet, so best to email us first if you want to come by and chat. We’re also still settling
in and adjusting to a space that can actually fit all three of us at once. The space is still a little bare so we’ve started an office wishlist; perhaps you can help acquire a few items:
* Zoom camera
* Conference Table
* Water Filter
* Wall mount brochure holder
* Area Rugs
* Plants
We will also be keeping an eye on the Habitat Store <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=ea2c015cf4&e=cbc38cef46> offerings,

Our Housing Link project <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=628683c58b&e=cbc38cef46> is an effort to introduce Home Seekers
in the workforce with Home Providers in Jefferson County.
In the spotlight today is:
Wade
Short Story: I'm getting married at the end of August, at which point my wife will be moving up to Washington all the way from Texas! She’s only visited Jefferson County a couple times,
but she already loves it almost as much as I do. We've been searching for somewhere to live that’s within our budget and keeps my work at the fort accessible, but unfortunately nothing
has panned out yet. We’d love to find somewhere to call our own for a while.
Seeking: Rental Location: Anywhere in East Jefferson County Tenants: 2 Number of Bedrooms: Studio, 1 Pets: No Occupation: Park Employee (Fort Worden) What makes you a great tenant?:
I'm quiet and handy with tools, and my fiancee loves to keep a clean house. Target Housing Cost is Under: $1500
