She looks through her Port Angeles apartment's pantry as her 1-year-old son, Alaric, lies asleep on the couch, blissfully unaware of the struggles his mom goes through. "There was a month where the grocery bill was like $900," she says. "Living is hard these days." "Calm" is what Hogerson is trying to keep. With childcare unaffordable, the single mother of three must stay home to care for her kids. "I think the hardest part is not wanting the kids to think they don't have anything," Haley says. We’ve made great progress and are on track for Redondo Heights construction to be completed in October 2024. MSC’s commitment to affordable housing development remains strong as the number of rent-burdened households continue to climb in our area and nationwide. We’ve all heard the guideline that your housing costs should be less than 30% of your income. A recent study from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University found that in the Seattle/Tacoma/Bellevue area, 49% of households are paying between 30-50% of their income toward rental housing costs. Even more staggering is that 25% of renters are paying 50% or more of their income towards housing. He had lived with roommates, but they were evicted after being unable to pay the rent. Because of this eviction on his record, Junior feared he wouldn’t be able to rent an apartment again. He spent time sleeping in his car and couch-surfing with friends until a former HopeSource client encouraged him to apply for the youth homelessness program. Junior and his client advocate began immediately working on finding stable housing. A unit became available at Pine Place, a HopeSource housing complex in Ellensburg, and he was able to move into a studio apartment within a month. He also worked with his client advocate to meet other personal goals, like getting his drivers license and finding full-time employment. “The client advocate helped push me to be a better person, to continue building a foundation for myself, and eventually reach where I'm at now,” says Junior. Veterans experiencing homelessness often receive VA benefits as a result of an injury or illness that was acquired or worsened during military service. Before this change, these benefits were considered income when determining eligibility for certain supportive housing developments—causing some veterans to exceed the income threshold for these programs. HUD’s policy changes will help more homeless veterans with service-connected disability benefits gain access to these housing developments. Additionally, HUD today awarded $20 million to public housing agencies to continue to improve the HUD-VASH program. City of Yakima officials received reports of health and safety deficiencies and saw holes in walls, broken windows and unlocked outside doors. Former residents noted overflowing toilets, mold and rotting beams. Thirty residents were evicted when the building was closed down in August 2021. While local social service providers and city officials worked to help those left homeless, the closure was a major loss of low-income housing in Yakima. Three years later, the Savoy and the Senator, another apartment building with the same owner, look very different. Despite state investments that kept child care businesses afloat during the pandemic, the child care crisis remains severe, according to the study by Child Care Aware of Washington. The state affiliate of a national nonprofit commissioned the analysis by research firm ECOnorthwest in Portland. The study found challenges such as disruptions, turnover, absenteeism and lost income due to child care issues amounted to $6.9 billion in 2023 in Washington. This introductory circle will bring participants into the heart space by inviting us to tell our own stories, to listen deeply to the stories of others by finding common ground, and to embrace our common humanity when we see ourselves in the perceived other. When this occurs, we build the trust that is necessary for courageous dialogue and the transformation of hearts and minds that shows up in what we say and do. This building model alternates between group conversation and one-on-one dyads, aiming to offer a deeper practice than usual.
