Sylvia Lee, MD, a melanoma clinician at Fred Hutch and UW Medicine, has led exciting clinical trials at Fred Hutch of an approach called TIL (tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte) therapy. In this treatment, physicians remove a patient’s tumor, locate the T cells that are naturally responding to the cancer, then multiply those anti-tumor cells billions of times over in the lab. Finally, the cells are returned to the patient’s bloodstream to target the cancer effectively. The results of the trial have been so promising that Joshua Veatch, MD, PhD, an immumotherapy specialist at Fred Hutch and UW Medicine, is closely examining one of the trial participants to see how the findings might benefit other patients. “The best-case scenario in studying his case is that we find what helped him do so well and bottle it up to use to help other people,” says Dr. Veatch.
