JCIRA was one of the organizations to attend! Brenda Rodriguez, WAISN Executive Director, summed up the significance of the Conference: “Coming together as passionate immigrant organizers and freedom fighters strengthens us as a network, allowing us to learn from each other's victories, and helping us better understand the interconnectedness of our struggles. It’s how we ensure that this immigrant justice movement continues to center, and be led by the voices of our community.” JCIRA delegates had the opportunity to learn and interact at the Conference with the priorities for WAISN for the coming year. Collectively the community organization reps and WAISN staff engaged in strategic planning sessions and a community-led analysis of grassroots organizing priorities. Over several sessions with community focus groups, surveys, and WAISN Hotline call data, the WAISN network identified these as the most immediate priorities: * Universal healthcare and health Insurance expansion; * Housing justice for all immigrants; * Access to funding, education, and economic opportunities; * Immigration reform and pathways to citizenship; * Immigrant worker’s rights and protections. <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/4f590fd7-a490-80d8-07d4-ac5959819f77.jpg> JCIRA delegates to the WAISN Conference (left to right): Board members Francisca Ramírez and Adriana Sixtos and JCIRA Multicultural Center Administrator Courtney Morales Thrall In Francisca’s report back from the Conference she noted one of the big topics at the WAISN Conference was Immigrant Worker Rights and how immigrant and undocumented people in Washington have the same right to get paid as any other worker. The discussion included equity pay, access to work permits, injured workers rights, unemployment insurance, minimum wage and paid sick leave. Beyond these specific workers’ rights, the Conference also focused on the need to form Rapid Response Teams to assist in observing and reporting incidents involving immigrants stopped by ICE and police authorities. Francisca commented, “When members of the immigrant community are stopped by the police, ICE or any immigration authorities, there are steps to take for their protection. We need to teach people about their rights. It’s so important for them to know that if they are stopped by the police or ICE, or they try to enter their home, not to give them permission to search your home or car unless they have a search warrant with a judge's written permission to do so.” <https://mcusercontent.com/e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83/images/c908a132-891d-2c02-c903-10594227d827.jpg> Board Member Francisca Ramírez spoke about equal pay for the same job done, and why no one should accept an hourly wage for less than $15 per hour, equal to the minimum wage. Also, Francisca was warmly received when she recited her poem "Immigrant" for those in attendance. JCIRA Board member Adriana also shared, “The WAISN 2024 membership convention was a very good resource to learn from other organizations about projects and plans for a possible Trump presidency, what we will do, how we can organize to inform, educate people, give them information, resources to know what to do in a possible raid or in case of detention.” JCIRA is in the process of organizing Know Your Rights Workshops for the immigrant communities in Port Townsend and Sequim. The consensus among the three delegates was that the Conference was an excellent gathering of inspiring individuals and organizations. Immigration News: Good and Bad A report on inhumane conditions at the Northwest Detention Center was reported recently <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=4b36a3585d&e=e9fe4694e3> in the Seattle Times, stating that the federal government should order health inspection of the Tacoma ICE detention center formerly known as the NW Detention Center in Tacoma. Despite years of activism, detainees there still are subject to injustice and terrible living conditions. ............................................ In some good news, the Seattle Times reports <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=7c98cd3dda&e=e9fe4694e3> on funding targeted to support newly arrived immigrants and asylum-seekers, including a grant to the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project. The NWIRP reports that they are excited to hit the ground running for the immigrant community, serving as the “lead legal spoke” that will conduct legal intakes for newly-arrived individuals seeking assistance from the Washington Migrant and Asylum-Seeker Support (WA MASS) Project. ............................................ Also, several news outlets have reported on the increasing rate of immigrants applying for and receiving US citizenship. The federal government is moving rapidly through a backlog of applications that built up during the Trump administration and the coronavirus pandemic.
