Below, middle: Another view of the property. Below, bottom: Members of the Chumsortium on a visit to the property in July 2024. A Special Property in Discovery Bay is Protected Forever! The Land Trust is thrilled to announce the permanent protection of a very special property on Discovery Bay, located within the estuary of Salmon and Snow Creeks <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com /track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=9bfef43fa5&e=c62e014255> . This area is critical for the recovery of Hood Canal summer chum, Puget Sound Chinook, and Puget Sound steelhead — all species listed as endangered by the Endangered Species Act. Containing more than 1,000 feet of Discovery Bay shoreline, 1.1 acres of upland habitat, and 4.6 acres of tidelands, the property is surrounded by water on three sides, with Maynard nearshore estuary to the southwest. Salmon Creek runs approximately 120 feet offshore of the property. <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=2f612973d4&e=c62e014255> The area surrounding the Maynard nearshore estuary provides an important transition zone for the Hood Canal summer chum which are hatched in Salmon and Snow Creeks. As juveniles, the chum will pause here on their journey to the ocean as their bodies make the physical transformation that allows them to move from a freshwater to a saltwater environment. <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=88a417baaa&e=c62e014255> The estuary, saltmarsh, and shoreline here all provide critical habitat for salmon and a wide variety of forage fish, shellfish, and other marine life, as well as shorebirds and waterfowl. Planned restoration by our longtime partners the North Olympic Salmon Coalition (NOSC) <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=3af5e15a08&e=c62e014255> will further increase the habitat value of the property. Today, a portion of the abandoned Chicago-Milwaukee railroad grade (last used in 1984) rises parallel to the shoreline of the protected property. NOSC’s planned restoration will remove the decommissioned railroad grade, its associated fill, and the creosote shoreline armoring, which are currently barriers to natural tidal flow along the shoreline of Discovery Bay. This will allow a more natural salt marsh formation, further increasing the habitat value of the property and estuary for salmon and other wildlife. Jefferson Land Trust got a big helping hand this year from three amazing AmeriCorps habitat enhancement crew members! From fall 2023 through summer 2024, Kelcie Kysar, Greg Sachs, and Jaise Wilson worked alongside Jefferson Land Trust staff and volunteers to carry out important forest health improvement, habitat enhancement, and trail projects; help plan and lead work parties and youth field trips; create a preserve management plan; and much more. “This was an incredibly valuable chance to work in habitat restoration and conservation, which are fields I would love to continue to dedicate my time and energy to in the future,” Jaise said. “The fulfilling work I've been involved with here has helped me continue my lifetime commitment to leaving this world a better place than when I found it,” said Greg. “I've also really loved getting to know the hardworking, caring, and inspiring people of this organization and those in the community who have made this work possible.” Read more about this awesome crew >> <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=be168b599d&e=c62e014255> Congratulations to our New Field Assistant, Former AmeriCorps Crew Member Greg Sachs! Since joining the organization as a member of a three-person AmeriCorps habitat enhancement crew in October 2023, Greg has been a fantastic asset to the Land Trust with his hard work, friendly attitude, and sincere belief in our mission. Call for Volunteers: Forest Health Assessment <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=d2396ba04b&e=c62e014255> 2023 forest health assessment volunteers in the field. Jefferson Land Trust is seeking volunteers to help conduct hands-on forest health assessments on several of our nature preserves to evaluate the ecological integrity and functions of the forests. The assessments help us identify areas of our preserves that need the most attention to accomplish our various management goals. Volunteers will participate in a group training from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Friday, September 13 with Jefferson Land Trust staff to go over the assessment protocol, navigation, and practice using diameter tapes and other equipment needed for data collection. This fall, the forest health assessments will need to be completed before the end of October. Volunteers will work in teams of two to four for quality control and safety, as the assessments require walking off-trail, through thick brush, and over uneven terrain. This project also involves entering data into an online data form after the in-the-forest assessment is complete. If you’re interested in volunteering to be on the forest health assessment team, please contact Cristina Villalobos at cvillalobos@saveland.org <mailto:cvillalobos@saveland.org> by Wednesday, September 11. Thank you!
