Take Fred Hutch and UW Medicine researchers Sylvia Lee, MD, and Joshua Veatch, MD, PhD, for example. Dr. Lee's innovative work on a clinical trial for TIL therapy is opening new doors in cancer treatment. This advanced method involves extracting a tumor, isolating the T cells that are already responding to the cancer, and then multiplying these cells by the billions in the lab. These enhanced cells are then reintroduced into the patient’s bloodstream to target the cancer. One of our trial participants, Chris Pope, experienced remarkable results — his stage 4 melanoma completely disappeared following the treatment. Inspired by these outcomes, Dr. Veatch is now exploring Chris’s success to learn how we can apply these insights to help more people manage cancer.
