Webb Maintenance Superintendent, Port Angeles, Washington, has been referred to this office for reply. You assumed correctly when you stated that the considerable error in mileage shown to Port Townsend on our signs may be due to routing via Eaglemount. It is our policy to indicate distance mileage via State highway routes when the destination is on the route of a State highway, even though a routing via a oounty road would substantially reduce the mileage. However, the mileage shown on any directional signs installed at the junction of a county road with a State highway should give the correct mileage to the city, town, or community located on the route of that particular Bounty road. Oar policy is based on the stranger in the area who must be gaided by our directional signs and who usually follows State routes as shown on road maps. Farther, we do not direct State highway traffic over county roads when a State highway facility is available to the same destination. We hope the above explanation clears this matter for you. We are sending to you under separate cover two sets of prints of the Jefferson County Road Index Mags revised as of January i, 1961, and a supply of LM-O and PPR 521 forms. One set of the road index maps is for you to indicate there- on the revisions as to road alignment, surface type changes, roads added to the county road system and roads transferred out of the system during the year of 196.1. This set of maps showing the loca- tions of the changes due to construction and transfers is to be suh- mitted with your LM-O report as the maps are part of your report- ing data. The other set of maps is for your files. A print of the new plats adding roads to the county road system should be included with your report in order that the correct location of these roads can be shown on the maps. Annexations to cities during the year are to be indicated on the map that you submit with your LM-O report, and the roads trans- ferred to the cities due to the annexations are recorded on the LM-O report. We would appreciate the receipt of the LM-O report for the year 1961, together with the set of maps showing the locations of the revisions at your earliest convenience, and if possible by January 1, 1962.
