Frank Chopp served as the Executive Director of the Fremont Public Association, now known as Solid Ground, for 17 years, from 1983 to 2000. In 1995, Frank took his dedication to advocacy
to Olympia, where he was elected as the state representative for Seattle’s 43rd District. His leadership and coalition-building skills quickly propelled him to the role of co-Speaker
of the House in 1999, and he became the sole Speaker in 2002. He led the Washington State House of Representatives for nearly two decades, from 1999 to 2019, marking one of the longest
tenures as a state legislative Speaker in U.S. history.

The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of $90 million in grants to organizations in 44 states and Puerto Rico to provide training and career services and related support
services, and work-based learning to help migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their dependents develop skills to pursue careers in agriculture or non-agriculture sectors.

National Farmworker Jobs Program will support 51 organizations with Career Services and Training grants. The grants support worker-centered, sector-based training that incorporates
industry partnerships and produces positive outcomes for workers and employers. The awards announced today include eight grants, totaling more than $15.8 million, for organizations
that did not receive an NFJP Career services and Training award in the previous competition.

In Pierce County, Senator Murray Highlights Early Childhood Education, Workforce Training, and Efforts to Fund Local Initiatives

Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, visited Pierce County <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=1cac
f814d2&e=fa97a7921d> to meet with constituents and local leaders, discussing issues ranging from early childhood education and nutrition to workforce training, and more.
At the start of the day, Senator Murray visited Evergreen Primary School to hear from local educators, local leaders, and Pierce County kids themselves as she works to secure $500,000
in Congressionally Directed Spending for Pierce County and its Gardening and Nutrition for Early Childhood Education program. The funding would be used to support garden installation
equipment and supplies, curriculum materials, and program support. This funding would help bring this program to 7 Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) sites across
Pierce County. The gardens will also provide fresh produce to supplement classroom meals. Produce that is harvested outside the ECEAP school year would be used at family engagement
events or supplied to local food banks.

after he initially told his story. He shifted uncomfortably. “I’m not used to being served,” he said with a chuckle. “I’m usually the one doing that!”
We first met him in 2019, where he shared the multitude of ways SNAP helped him when he needed it the most. In 2012, SNAP helped him when he found himself unexpectedly homeless. His
girlfriend moved out and left him to cover the rent on their shared apartment. With all their furniture and belongings gone, he had to seek refuge at a local shelter. “I lost everything
except my clothes,” he recalls.

Community Action Turns 60!
Though BMAC <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=b9b94446df&e=fa97a7921d> is 58 years old, as a Community Action Agency, it is a part
of a nationwide Community Action movement that turned 60 at the end of August!
A direct result of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty and from the advocacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Action Agencies work on national, state, and local levels
to connect millions of children, families, and individuals to greater opportunity! It is the promise of Community Action and its agencies to change people’s lives, embody the spirit
of hope,
improve communities, and make America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.
BMAC staff commemorated this milestone along with over 1,800 other community action members at the National Community Action Partnership Conference in Seattle in August.
Additionally, our staff celebrated the achievements of Community Education & Engagement Director Barbara Maxwell and Human Resources Director Margarita Banderas as they earned their
Certified Community Action Professional (CCAP) certification! We are so proud of them and extend our sincerest gratitude for their dedication to Community Action excellence!

King County Housing Authority (KCHA) has been our partner for decades, enabling us to serve KCHA residents living in White Center, Kent, and Auburn. In addition to providing affordable

Day of Service commemorates 50 years of building community to end poverty

Nearly 200 volunteers at five sites came together on Friday, August 23 to do community cleanup, garden, and put some sweat equity into the proposition that by working together we can

Fed grant supports transportation planning tool in WA

The nonprofit Hopelink <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=e6c3d26cd4&e=fa97a7921d> received a $519,000 Innovative Coordinated Access
and Mobility Project grant, a program created through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021.
Staci Sahoo, director of mobility management for the nonprofit Hopelink, said the funds will support the second phase in the development of its online tool, the Find a Ride Trip Planner

avenues for signing up.

Throughout this summer, Pierce County Human Services <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=a0823da710&e=fa97a7921d> ’ Community Action
Programs Division, together with Aging and Disability Resources (ADR), Pierce County Communications, and the Sewer Traffic Operations (STOP) facility staff collaborated in an effort
to provide 300 portable air conditioners to our senior neighbors.
Seniors and those with disabilities are at most risk for heat related injuries and illnesses that can lead to death. This effort will help eliminate those concerns for these seniors
and their families.
We had a great turnout of volunteers for our drive-through event, and thank everyone who participated.
We are anxiously awaiting word from our funding partners allowing us to host another event like this next spring.

2bfd070c54&e=fa97a7921d> The Office of Homeless Youth is designing a new pilot program that would send cash directly to young people experiencing housing insecurity.
An event asking young people who have experienced homelessness or housing instability to offer their input on the proposed pilot will take place at the Downtown Spokane Library on Thursday.

New air quality program for overburdened communities set to launch
The state Department of Ecology is set to announce a new program that will fund community-based initiatives to improve air quality <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbd
a818ebd4ce40eb&id=e784349bbb&e=fa97a7921d> in areas where pollution is especially harmful. Funded by the Climate Commitment Act, the program supports local efforts to slash pollution
such as reducing vehicle miles, collecting yard waste to discourage burning, and installing efficient electric heat pumps.

Funding new air quality projects for communities by communities is an innovative approach for us. It’s part of our ongoing work to implement the air quality and environmental justice
provisions of the Climate Commitment Act (CCA).
These grants will fund planning, community engagement, and development of projects to improve air quality and protect people’s health in Washington communities <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.

El Grito event kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month

Returning for a third year, El Grito will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month on the Washington side of the Gorge on Sunday, Sept. 15 from 3-6 p.m. at Rhinegarten Park. Admission is free,

Registration is now open for Housing Washington 2024 scheduled for September 24-26 at the Spokane Convention Center in Spokane.
The conference will offer tracks on advocacy and communications, home ownership, multifamily management and multifamily development. Commerce will be convening several sessions, which
include Planning for Deeply Affordable Housing.

In observance of Indigenous Peoples' Day, join us as we take participants into a Racial Healing Circle Experience. This introductory circle will bring participants into the heart space
by inviting us to tell our own stories, to listen deeply to the stories of others by finding common ground, and to embrace our common humanity when we see ourselves in the perceived
other. When this occurs, we build the trust that is necessary for courageous dialogue and the transformation of hearts and minds that shows up in what we say and do. This building model
alternates between group conversation and one-on-one dyads, aiming to offer a deeper practice than usual. Racial Healing Circles satisfy the unrecognized need of communal healing and
shared liberation.

Hopelink has opened registration for its 29th Annual Reaching Out Luncheon, the organization’s premier fundraising event. The event which will take place on Monday, Oct. 21 at Meydenbauer
Center in downtown Bellevue and stream online, shares the powerful, real-life stories of north and east King County residents who have partnered with Hopelink in their journeys to exit
poverty. Renowned author Stephanie Land will take the stage with keynote remarks.
"Poverty is so complex. With only an hour-long event, it’s important to us that our guests come away with a stronger understanding of the systemic factors keeping people in poverty,
as well as the strength and resilience we see every day as people build the tools to exit poverty," said Meghan Altimore, Hopelink Chief Operating Officer. "Stephanie Land has so powerfully
