While my family would have preferred to show our support for a new pool in person at this meeting, our busy schedule with school/work, soccer practice, and preparing dinner has prevented
us from attending. I also know that we are not alone. I have spoken to many parents throughout the county who are in support of a new pool, but find it hard to consistently bring a
strong voice to these public meetings. We are in support of a pool that is more centrally located (Hadlock or Chimacum), especially if it means the project can happen within the next
couple of years before we lose the MV pool entirely due to its age and poor condition. Therefore I'm hoping to provide a few key points as you consider moving forward with the task
force's recommendations.
* The pool must have at least two tanks in order to be truly family friendly and fun. We need warm water recreation, with fun amenities (like a slide, lazy river, whirlpool, splash features,
etc) and request that this not be cut as part of any value engineering and cost savings in the pool plans. If the pool is not a fun place to play and gather with friends, families
will continue to drive out of county to pools that provide those amenities.
* The design should provide a regulation sized pool for swim teams / swim meets and also a section with a gradually sloping entrance so that even the smallest children have a place to
play, learn, and feel comfortable in the water. Our experience with the current MV pool is that the shallowest depth is far too deep for small children and safety.
* Wellness features like a sauna, steam room, hot tub, and cold plunge will also attract caregivers who need a moment to rejuvenate while kids play, or who may use those amenities as
part of affordable healthcare.
* Please consider working towards dedicated bike lanes into and out of Port Townsend between the pool / parks / schools in Hadlock and Chimacum so that we can all arrive safely without
using cars.
Thank you for your time.
