Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Concerned parties, I write to you as a retired health professional of 35 years to urge you to support a new pool in our county. As we know, healthcare is expensive for our communities. We also know that prevention is the least expensive treatment or cure. I want to make a case that a community pool is an essential part of the prevention of heart disease, diabetes, and immobility. There are two groups of people to whom the pool access is essential to their ongoing good health: 1. the elderly and 2. those who because of physical limitations. (Those who cannot walk or do exercises on the ground.) There is nothing that replaces water as a successful exercise venue for many of these two groups of people. Thus, having a pool is invaluable for preventing community members from regularly making extra hospital visits. Having only sedentary options leads to reoccurring problems and higher medical expenses for everyone. One woman I see at the pool often, who is limited in her walking abilities, reminded me to mention mental health in this letter. There is great comaraderie between many of the exercisers. So a pool serves to help meet important social needs of folks who have less ability to get around also. One more health-safety advantage of community pools….teaching children to swim is one of the best ways to prevent many of the 4000 yearly drowning deaths of children in the US per year. Thank you for your consideration and for your hard work. Sincerely, Jane Ann White, retired RN 818 Harrison St. Port Townsend, Wa. 98368 503-312-8795
