Geoff was an extraordinary community leader, a devoted friend to many, and a loving husband and father. We ask for privacy and respect for his family and loved ones as our community grieves this tremendous loss. Geoff worked within the Washington Community Action Network for his entire career, dedicating over 20 years to ending poverty in our region. From his Boy Scout days to his appointment as Hopelink’s CEO this April, Geoff was driven to serve his community – and he did so valiantly. Geoff began his career with Hopelink in 2004 as a Rural Connections Program Manager, later returning as COO in 2015 before he was appointed interim and then permanent CEO in 2024. With his leadership, Hopelink was able to create new departments and program innovations that reached hundreds of thousands of people who utilized the agency’s services to gain stability and build skills to exit poverty. He was an ever-humble, singular changemaker. He was a fierce advocate for his staff and cared deeply for their wellbeing. He was a steady, stalwart partner to leaders and organizations across the region – and nationwide – who shared his passion for building healthy, thriving communities. But most of all, he was a proud husband to his wife Natalie and father to their daughters Lucille and Eleanor. He often shared the joy his family brought him with his coworkers, sending Teams chats and emails with pictures from family vacations, gymnastics lessons, or when the tooth fairy came. The Crump family have been important members of our Hopelink community for years and will always be so. Our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Crump family and his friends. We’ll miss his presence deeply. We’ll miss his humor, his laugh, his favorite grey North Face jackets and Doc Martens, his steadiness, his guidance, and his friendship. We’ll miss his never-ending determination to support our neighbors and end poverty. Hopelink won’t be the same without him. His determination and unyielding faith in the Hopelink community will live on. We can hear him saying his signature, “Let’s shove off,” and throwing up a peace sign as we march forward with the mission he carried out so resolutely. He will always remain in our hearts. Geoff, we can never thank you enough. We’ll miss you so much. With deep care, All of us at Hopelink The Hopelink Board of Directors has appointed Chief Operating Officer Meghan Altimore as Interim CEO. All Hopelink services will continue while Hopelink provides grief support for its staff. Community members who wish to send sympathies may do so on this online memorial <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=12366576fc&e=fa97a7921d> . Almost 700,000 WA households receive $200 credit on their electric bills Proceeds from the state’s controversial cap-and-invest law covered the tab. State Department of Commerce officials estimated 685,113 low- and moderate-income households got the one-time credit as of Thursday, roughly 10,000 more than predicted when Gov. Jay Inslee launched the program <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=7f73ea1e95&e=fa97a7921d> in July. “We embraced technology and new solutions to ensure the funds reached as many households as possible, with minimal effort required from them,” Deputy Assistant Director Cheryl Chan Hardee wrote in an email. “Given the short timeframe, we were able to impact countless families, and that’s what makes this accomplishment truly special.” “Officials of the nonprofit Washington State Community Action Partnership <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=bed68774d3&e=fa97a7921d> , a network of 30 Community Action Agencies serving low-income individuals and families across the state, kept close watch on the program to ensure credits reached those in economic need. After the Spokane Valley resident suffered a health scare last summer, he and his wife had to rely on their Social Security payments to get by. So when he learned that he qualified for a state-funded $200 credit to help lower- to middle-income residents pay their power bill, he applied, hopeful to relieve some of the financial burden on his household. Across Washington state, hundreds of thousands of lower-income households have received the credit, enough to completely pay for months of electricity in some cases. Avista alone was provided enough state funds to provide the credit to 52,500 households. “Varallo, however, was not able to receive the same benefit. His power provider, Spokane Valley utility Modern Electric Water Company, declined to take part in the program that could have helped 1,800 of its fixed- and lower-income customers. Modern is one of only six utilities that declined to take part, including three headquartered in Idaho with limited service area in Washington, and its customers had by far the most to lose, passing up on nearly four times as many credits as the other five utilities combined. At the top of the member-owned utility’s website, Varallo believes he found the reason Modern declined to take part: political opposition to the program that funds the credits.” “In an ominously designed article featured at the top of the utility’s homepage on the Internet, government relations and communications manager Chelsea Martin details “What Washington Won’t Tell You…10 Astonishing Facts About Gov. Inslee’s Climate Commitment Act.”’ Continue reading…. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=2a353c43c4&e=fa97a7921d> <https://mcusercontent.com/acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb/images/8c8501aa-32c4-13c1-d705-95d6ce222c76.png> OlyCAP’s new executive director sets priority of fiscal operations Morgan to lead agency after coming from Easterseals Washington Olympic Community Action Programs <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=af67b8fcc4&e=fa97a7921d> has hired Holly Morgan as its executive director. This year has been transformative — shaped by relationship building, passionately learning, and robustly planning for the future. Our mission, deeply rooted in the legacy of those who united in 1964 to combat poverty and racism in Seattle’s Central District, continues to drive our efforts toward an equitable future for all Washingtonians. “Because of society’s biased systems and skewed governmental policies, the inequality gap continues to grow, with the top fifth of Seattle’s population receiving 53% of the income and the bottom fifth just 2%. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=00142a3dfd&e=fa97a7921d> At the same time, demand for Byrd Barr Place’s essential services — food, shelter, and energy assistance — has grown. When the truck started to fall into disrepair, shelter staff gave them a number for Anton Preisinger, the founding director of Northwest Hospitality. He might be able to help. Their radiator was rusting and needed a replacement, along with a new water pump and a fixup on their heater. However, an analysis of 3-year averages of poverty rates by states shows the SPM rate was lower than the official rate in 32 states. SPM rates may be higher in some states for several reasons, from differences in housing costs and homeownership rates to higher taxes or medical expenses. The two poverty measures provide distinct indicators of U.S. economic well-being. The SPM broadens the official poverty measure by accounting for government programs designed to assist low-income families that are not included in the official poverty measure while also including federal and state taxes and necessary expenses. Under the Climate Commitment Act, the state taxes polluters and uses revenues to cut greenhouse gas emissions. I-2117 supporters say it won’t make a difference in emissions, though, and is driving up the cost of living in Washington. But the non-profit Food Lifeline is joining the fight to keep it in place. Teaming up with the Othello Food Bank and local volunteers, Second Harvest distributes free produce to families in need. The regular food distributions have become a lifeline for many in this rural, agriculturally driven town. When this occurs, we build the trust that is necessary for courageous dialogue and the transformation of hearts and minds that shows up in what we say and do.
