Together, their work can mean more patients experience promising outcomes like that of Navy veteran Wayne Lundberg. In 2022, Wayne was diagnosed with prostate cancer. His urologist wanted to perform a prostatectomy, the surgical removal of the prostate, but Wayne wanted to understand all of his treatment options and began researching Fred Hutch. That’s when he learned about proton therapy and turned to Emily Weg, MD, a prostate cancer specialist at Fred Hutch and UW Medicine, and the associate medical director of our proton therapy facility. Under Dr. Weg’s care, Wayne received proton therapy, which is able to specifically damage the tumor using a focused beam of protons, with limited harm to neighboring healthy tissues. Wayne has experienced only minor side effects, and since completing treatment, he’s had three follow-up tests, all with great results.
