Specialty crops are defined as “fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops (including floriculture). Eligible applicants include: * industry associations * producer groups * commodity commissions * non-profit organizations * for-profit organizations * local, state, and federal government entities * educational institutions Projects cannot benefit a single commercial product. On-Farm Biochar Trial: Seeking Participants American Farmland Trust (AFT) is working on: Breaking Down Barriers to Biochar Adoption on Farms from Coast to Coast <https://wsu.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=360ae1ff3a734621548b3598b&id=ec2d7 01897&e=bae7ffec58> , funded through a USDA-NRCS On-Farm Trials Conservation Innovation Grant. They are looking for two farmers in Washington who are interested in implementing biochar trials on their farms. Biochar application will be free, and there is a payment for participation. Soil sampling and economic outcome analysis results are included and provided to the farmer. The farmer will be required to share operations information and yield data from experimental plots with AFT and follow an agreed management plan for the length of the project. Interested? Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training When: Wednesday, October 16 8AM-5PM or Saturday, December 7th 8AM - 5PM Where: Pierce Conservation District, Puyallup Cost: free! Lunch provided. The course will provide a foundation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and co-management information, FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirements, and details on how to develop a farm food safety plan. The PSA Grower Training Course is one way to satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement for those farms that the rule covers. Individuals who participate in this course are expected to gain a basic understanding of: * Microorganisms relevant to produce safety and where they may be found on the farm * How to identify microbial risks, practices that reduce risks, and how to begin implementing produce safety practices on the farm * Parts of a farm food safety plan and how to begin writing one * Requirements in the FSMA Produce Safety Rule and how to meet them.
