HomeMy WebLinkAbout100424 - Press Release_ Shellfish Partial Re-Opening in Oak Bay_ Mats Mats Bay and Port LudlowGood morning, Recreational shellfish beaches in Oak Bay, Port Ludlow, Mats Mats Bay and the northern shore of the Quimper Peninsula have changed from being closed for all species of shellfish, to being closed for butter and varnish clams only. Testing of recent shellfish samples from several locations in the county by Washington State Department of Health (DOH) indicate that the level of biotoxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning has dropped below the closure limit for certain species of clams, oysters and mussels. Butter and varnish clams, which retain toxins longer than other species, remain closed in these areas. Jefferson County Public Health has posted warning signs at public access points to reflect these changes. To find out which areas are safe to harvest shellfish in Washington, and for a link to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) harvesting seasons and rules, please check the DOH Shellfish Safety map at http://www.doh.wa.gov/ShellfishSafety.htm or call the Biotoxin Hotline at 1-800-562-5632. For the latest information on regulations and seasons, visit wdfw.wa.gov/places-to-go/shellfish-beaches or call WDFW Fish Program customer service at 360-902-2700.
