Investing in this kind of workforce training not only helps us build a strong economy for our state and nation, but helps make life better for people in Washington state.” The OIC <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=3b92f0581c&e=fa97a7921d> is an economic development and career training agency in Yakima, Washington that educates, trains, and provides supportive services to low-income and rural communities. Our success is possible because of our donors, event sponsors, table sponsors, team captains, volunteers, speakers, and many helping hands. Your support is critical in El Centro de la Raza’s work to make Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of a “Beloved Community” a reality—one that is only possible if people of diverse backgrounds come together in mutually supporting relationships of care, respect and love while working for justice within our communities, our nation, and our world. Through your generosity, we raised more than $638,000 for vital programs and services that improve the lives of more than 21,000 individuals and families across our region. Proceeds from the gala will strengthen and grow our work, which includes feeding the hungry, helping a family make rent, empowering students to graduate from high school and attend college, and supporting our immigrant community. “ We also want to congratulate Representative Frank Chopp on receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedicated work to Building the Beloved Community.” Continue reading…. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=b9caaa01fd&e=fa97a7921d> Solid Ground History: Community engagement is key <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=b9be04aa78&e=fa97a7921d> When Lee Harper joined Solid Ground’s <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=e259fb707d&e=fa97a7921d> forebear, the Fremont Public Association (FPA), in early 1998, Marra Farm was a 4-acre tangle of weeds in South Park. He attempted to navigate the support systems available but struggled to make progress. Eventually, he was referred to HopeSource and the SSVF program in Wenatchee. Officials with the Whatcom County Department of Health and Community Services discussed the situation recently in a County Council committee meeting. Ann Beck, community health and human services manager, told the council’s Public Works and Health Committee that several locations that have been used in the past — the Civic Stadium locker rooms, the former Drop-in Center on West Holly Street and the State Street location used last winter — are not available this winter. Base Camp won’t be available and the Lighthouse Mission, which is opening in October, won’t have the staff to take the 100 people it’s designed for this winter. “Meanwhile, about 100 households will get motel stays, mostly families with children, through Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County, Lydia Place, the YWCA, the Opportunity Council <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=8ae4de67af&e=fa97a7921d> and Ferndale Community Services, Beck said.” Continue reading…. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=9d09dd8841&e=fa97a7921d> <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=13c19982b0&e=fa97a7921d> State Home Energy Assistance Program (SHEAP) The new State Home Energy Assistance Program (SHEAP) helps people in Washington pay their utility bills and move to low-to-no carbon heating and cooling options. The city, situated in a picturesque valley amid mountains and pine forests in the eastern part of the state, went the entire season without a single day of air quality registering at unhealthy levels — a first since 2016. A major reason was the lack of wildfire smoke during the annual wildfire season that runs from the summer into early fall. "This year, it hasn't been too bad," said John Hoover, director of housing services for Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818eb d4ce40eb&id=cef0df99d5&e=fa97a7921d> , an anti-poverty organization in the city for more than 50 years. It's there when you go to bed at night. You just can't get rid of it. It's like particulate matter in your throat, which can't be good for anybody." “'One-two punch' of heat and smoke The EPA grant funding will roll out over a three-year period. If passed, the measure would give authority back to local governments to enact or change laws on rent control. For advocates, passing Proposition 33 <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/c lick?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=64fb02aa41&e=fa97a7921d> would be a critical opportunity to address California’s housing crisis head-on. For the real estate industry, defeating Proposition 33 would mean maintaining the status quo in a market that has made billions for corporate landlords. While rent control — caps on rent increases — provides relief to tenants, some economists suggest <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=cfb7844003&e=fa 97a7921d> there are significant trade-offs: Rent control policies can lead to higher rents for uncontrolled units <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&i d=5fce660cac&e=fa97a7921d> , reduce landlords’ incentive to maintain units, and dampen the creation of new rental housing — exacerbating affordable housing shortages. But as lot rents rise, this source of affordable housing is at risk. Fortunately, in response, there has emerged a growing movement of resident-owned cooperatives, also known as ROCs. Today, more than 22,000 families who own manufactured housing units in more than 300 mobile home parks across the United States are member-owners of these cooperatives. In this 90-minute webinar, cosponsored and co-moderated by NPQ and Shelterforce, a panel of folks, including residents, advocates, and technical assistance providers will discuss the ins and outs of how to build land security for manufactured housing owners, by enabling mobile home communities to come together and own the land jointly.
