That assistance is through the State Home Energy Assistance Program, or SHEAP, announced last week by the Commerce Department. The program is administered in Grant and Adams counties by OIC of Washington. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=7e22551187&e=fa97a7921d> “The program’s intent is to assist low-income households to meet their immediate home energy needs and provide replacement of inefficient, outdated, or unsafe home heating and cooling systems with more energy-efficient electric heating and cooling technologies, such as heat pumps,” Sy Ruiz, OIC spokesman, wrote in an email to the Columbia Basin Herald. Statewide, SHEAP will aid more than 1.2 million people, according to Commerce’s announcement. This extends the benefits to substantially more people than the federal Low-Income Heating Energy Assistance Program, which only covers about 500,000 Washingtonians. The summertime barbecue bash celebrated the end of weeks’ worth of updates and rehab on the apartments. The work—ranging from a fresh coat of exterior paint to preventative rehab work—required the residents to temporarily move into local hotels and rental units for much of the summer. Made possible by the generous support from Whatcom County, WECU, and Interfaith Coalition, the project at Dorothy Place is a testament to the power of community. It is your support that ensures Dorothy Place will remain a safe, warm, and welcoming place for individuals and families for generations to come. Increasingly, young people are giving up on the dream of home ownership, as median prices for housing in the U.S. rise to six times the median income—up from four times the median income just two decades ago. The lack of affordable housing has not only made the dream of home ownership difficult for many American families, but it has also played a crucial role in the rising level of homelessness throughout the country. More than 250,000 Americans were living in temporary shelters or on the streets in 2023, according to estimates by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. And while the causes of homelessness are complex, most experts agree that a housing supply shortage is a key factor. Barriers to accessing culturally competent care have led to agencies embedding services within our programs through partnerships and other initiatives. MINDING THE GAP: Poverty, homelessness, and restoring our broken mental health system will explore how our community navigates the intersections of poverty, race, culture, social/emotional wellbeing, behavioral health, and homelessness. Local experts from the human services community and program participants will discuss facts and myths impacting behavioral health – and innovative approaches to services for people facing housing insecurity, trauma-impacted families, and other aspects of poverty.
