HomeMy WebLinkAbout101524 - Upcoming Legacy Forest Timber Sales in Jefferson County_ _Last Crocker_ and _Maladjusted_ALERT: BE CAUTIOUS This email originated outside the organization. Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Dear Commissioners, Thanks so much for your work to conserve Legacy forests in our county over the past few years. On that note, I'd like to call your attention to two planned DNR clearcuts of Legacy forests in Quilcene, very close to 101. The "Last Crocker" timber sale plans to clearcut 165 acres near Crocker and Tarboo Lakes, the majority of which is Legacy forest, with stands originating between 1932 and 1938. The entire sale is located on State Forest Transfer trust lands. This sale was originally proposed last year but was withdrawn by DNR earlier this year after a local judge issued a preliminary injunction against it. In Legacy Forest Defense Coalition v. DNR et al., on January 22, 2024, the Jefferson County Superior Court enjoined the Last Crocker Sorts timber sale on the grounds that Legacy Forest Defense Coalition demonstrated that “the forest land plan has not been established for the Straits Planning Unit.” More on that here <https://www.wlfdc.org/_files/ugd/4603 c1_23abd6357e6f43c8a718c78f73e5b4cc.pdf> and here <https://www.ptleader.com/stories/short-term-future-of-quilcene-forest-decided,155413> . This sale is expected to be up for decision at the next Board of Natural Resources (BNR) meeting, which I think will be on November 5th. Here is a map of the area: The "Maladjusted" timber sale plans to clearcut 130 acres total across the landscape. This will likely be going through the SEPA process sometime in the next couple months. The entire sale is located on State Forest Transfer trust lands. The area we are concerned about lies just north of Quilcene, between 101 and a bunch of land owned by Pope Resources Inc. This stand originated in 1941 according to DNR's data but contains trees of all ages, including a few scattered residual old-growth trees. Here is a map of the area: This Forest Practices Act (FPA) comment period recently ended for this sale. We expect the SEPA comment period to open soon because the decision date on this sale is December 18, 2024 according to our latest public disclosure report (PDR). Thanks for taking the time to read this email. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I look forward to working with you to cancel or modify these timber sales and continue to protect the Legacy forests in our county. -- Jim Oliver Forest Monitoring Director southsound@c4rf.org <mailto:southsound@c4rf.org> (509)-906-4445
