ALERT: BE CAUTIOUS This email originated outside the organization. Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Major Milestones of the Week Anacortes/San Juan Islands Winter 2025 schedule is out! The new winter schedule is now live on our schedule page <https://wsdot.com/ferries/schedule/scheduledetailbyroute.aspx?route=ana-sj-sid> so customers can plan ahead for their travel. The new schedule begins Dec. 29 with reservations available starting at 10 a.m. on Oct. 29. Between our twelve task force meetings, public meetings, an online open house, and rigorous community engagement during the last two years, WSF is excited to unveil this updated winter sailing schedule that will improve reliability. Our work with the task force continues as we work on the schedules for spring, summer, and fall, which will roll out similarly to this one for winter. We’re excited to release the new schedule which will significantly increase on-time-performance and service reliability. We thank you for all your help in this undertaking. Spotlight * This week we are moving several vessels to reliable service on multiple routes along Puget Sound. These complicated but important boat moves allow WSF to stage vessels or move them to our maintenance facility or a shipyard so important work can begin for scheduled maintenance, needed repairs, required safety inspections and sea trials. * Kaleetan is operating on the Anacortes-San Juan Islands route. * Samish has replaced Suquamish on the Mukilteo-Clinton route. * Suquamish has replaced Puyallup on the Edmonds-Kingston route. This will downsize the route for about five weeks however maintains two-boat service. * Starting tomorrow, the Chimacum will move to the Seattle-Bremerton route and the Puyallup will operate on the Seattle-Bainbridge route. This downsizes the Bremerton route for approximately 2-3 days. * The Walla Walla will undergo maintenance work at Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility but will return to Seattle Bremerton later this week. The Chimacum will move back to Seattle-Bainbridge. * Thanks to the outstanding work of the Tacoma engine crews and Eagle Harbor Maintenance teams for making prompt repairs to the shaft seals during an emergency maintenance issue, minimizing service impacts to our customers. The Operations and Vessel Engineering teams also demonstrated outstanding teamwork addressing the Tacoma's emergency. During the vessel outage, WSF team were still able to support an important planned emergency drill by first responders on Vashon Island, ensured vessels were fueled, and reassigned crew schedules. Real-time information was continuously shared among all, allowing for timely decisions and effective communication to keep the public informed. Service Reliability For the week of Oct. 14-20, we completed 98.3% of our 2,787 scheduled sailings. Of our 48 cancellations, 73% (35) were due to vessels being out of service, 12% (6) were due to tidal currents, 12% (6) were due to weather, and 2% (1) was due to an emergency. For the fourth week in a row, we had no crewing-related cancellations. Vessel Availability We’re operating at our 15-vessel current service level. While we’ve been adding a 16th “bonus” boat seven days a week on the Fauntleroy/Southworth/Vashon “Triangle” route when crewing and vessel availability allows, we don’t expect to have a vessel available for this service until after Nov. 4. Jumbo Mark II Conversions/New Vessels/Terminal Electrification Hybrid Conversions – Upgrades to the Wenatchee propulsion system and installation of electric power equipment is expected to be completed and the vessel is expected to return to service in summer 2025. Significant work has been completed to date including removal of two propulsion diesel generators, installation of electric power conversion and distribution equipment, upgrades to obsolete propulsion control equipment, reconfiguration of piping systems, and build-out of two new battery rooms. The Tacoma conversion will not happen until the Wenatchee returns to service. New Vessels – The contracting process for new vessels continues and we’re in active discussions with industry about the terms of the Invitation for Bid we released. We’ve received three pre-qualification packages from shipyards across the country. We are still scheduled to deliver two boats in 2028. Terminal Electrification – WSF is in the process of planning and designing charging infrastructure at 16 of our ferry terminals. This effort begins with ensuring that each terminal will be able to secure sufficient energy through collaboration with local utilities.
