Stormwater Strategic Initiative Request for Proposals Now Open
The EPA's National Estuary Program makes substantive investments in Puget Sound recovery through funding opportunities by the Habitat, Shellfish, and Stormwater Strategic Initiative
Leads (SILs). Each SIL releases competitive Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to provide grants to sub-recipients to advance our investment priorities, described in the Strategic Initiatives'
Investment Plan. These projects protect and restore habitat, water quality, and harvestable shellfish beds and help build a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future for Puget
Sound. The Stormwater Strategic Initiative has opened Requests for Proposals for projects addressing multiple investment priorities under the Toxics in Fish (TIF) and Freshwater Quality
Implementation Strategies. The application period is open now through December 31, 2024.

Nearly 1,500 Winlock Area Residents Opt in to Broadband Expansion Project
Lewis County officials broke ground on a joint project with ToledoTel in October 2023 that could bring broadband service to more than 2,300 homes and businesses in the Winlock area.
During a groundbreaking ceremony, Dale Merten, ToledoTel vice president and CEO, estimated that the project would be completed in October 2026.

ACLU Lawsuit Claims Yakima County Defendants Left in Legal Limbo Due to Public Defender Shortage
Statewide, the criminal justice system is struggling with a shortage of public defenders, but the ACLU has filed a lawsuit specifically on behalf of defendants in Yakima County.
ACLU staff attorney David Montes said they’re suing Yakima County because that’s where the crisis has reached new heights, with about 300 defendants at any given time waiting weeks or
months for the county to assign them a public defender.
