Last week our staff and Board of Directors went on the road for our last board meeting and tour of the year. Walla Walla and Columbia Counties really showed off – fall was in full force with mild temperatures, beautiful yellows and golds, and blue skies. It made for a perfect two-days in southeast Washington. You can read about the business meeting and the project tour below, but one of the highlights was our special guest speaker, Representative Jake Fey, Chairman of the House Transportation Committee. He briefed the board on his legislative priorities and plans, specifically plans to introduce legislation this session for a Road Usage Charge (RUC) Pilot Program. Using a phased-in approach, it would serve as an eventual replacement for the declining Motor Vehicle Fuel Tax in Washington over the coming decades. He also discussed the budget challenges he and his colleagues will be facing in January, that we shared last month <https://t.e2ma.net/click/lg9llm/lghk51mb/92yffwc> . Representative Fey stressed that they need to hear from stakeholders and will be holding upcoming listening sessions in the months ahead. We also appreciated a special presentation from Columbia County Engineer Grant Morgan, PE and Umatilla Public Works Director Tom Fellows not only on the successes and issues they have in their own counties, but the unique challenges of managing roads that cross the Washington/Oregon state line.
