Realistic Expectations
Perhaps this recent headline is misleading "Columbus residents hope vacant housing registry is solution for city's housing shortage"
A registry isn’t meant to hold property owners accountable for maintenance—that’s the function of the municipal property maintenance code, and its definitely not the solution for a housing
shortage.
However, the registry is an essential tool that supports these efforts—a "means to an end."
Communities should continue to be proactive, truly understand the other needs to implement real change (focused attention, adequate staffing, proper training, etc.), and leverage every
available tool. It's also crucial to allow those who want to help and have the knowledge and experience, to do so!
