The old house across the street is always quiet, no one comes in, no one comes out. The deer don’t even settle there. Sometimes a single light illuminates in the window — maybe it is
haunted, I suggest to my kids. Truth is, it is one of approximately 3,380 vacant homes across Jefferson County. Not only does this mean one less house for hopeful trick-or-treaters,
but it raises the question of what roles do equity and privilege play when it comes to housing. Now there are lots of opinions out there on this topic, our media consumption section
below even has an interesting article talking about the possible implementation of a home vacancy tax in South Lake Tahoe <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1a
d2608f9c4e51e6660&id=48ba9f2c2a&e=b56e9d81e8> , CA. But simply put, everyday I look at a house that has been sitting empty for over a year. Meanwhile there are people, like Raven, a
storyteller that spoke at our “Housing Jefferson County’s Economy: A Community Survey Report” presentation, a single mom of two working multiple jobs and relying on the support of local
family, who still can’t find any opportunities to move out of their undersized trailer.
But that’s why HSN is here: to push tough conversations, build community connections and explore all possible housing solutions. We’re here to collaborate. So read on to catch our “tour
dates”, casually join us for our next housing happy hour, or get inspired to start your own fictitious cover band.

COMMUNITY SURVEY REPORT
Two weeks ago we presented our Community Survey Report to a packed room at the Northwest Maritime Center. Tears and laughter filled the room (as did good food and drinks). However this
information demands more than one night of attention. With over 950 individual responses, and input from local employers and businesses, this survey is one of the largest this community
has ever seen! We recognize and appreciate the trust many of you have bestowed upon us and we plan on carrying your voices forward.
Soon, we will have a dedicated webpage to showcase our findings including a live recording of the event and accompanying story boards <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click

HOUSING HAPPY HOUR
We’re ordering up another round of riveting housing conversation for the community. Grab a sweater, bring a friend, and roll on down to the Pour House where we’ll light-heartedly solve
the housing crisis together. See you next Wednesday 4 to 6 PM!
The Pourhouse is a 21+ venue and serves beer, wine, cider, and NA beverages. Outside food is permitted and light snacks will be provided.

COMMODIFYING HOUSING
Two Jefferson County mobile home parks are under contract to be sold <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=4ef06bb4ba&e=b56e9d81e8>
— this has happened quickly, off market, and with little notice to residents. The Olympic Village Mobile Home Park at 4 Corners and B&R Mobile Home Park in Port Hadlock together represent
over 150 units, and some of the most affordable housing in our area.
Lot fees have already jumped 33% and efforts to form a Resident Owned Community (ROC) <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=4b7cfefd3d&e=b56
e9d81e8> to buy the parks outright were rejected. Many residents are now worried about loosing their homes. Despite being ‘mobile’ homes, these units are not easily moved, requiring
a lot of expense, and logistics.
Commodification of housing has detrimental impacts on peoples lives, and this is an unfortunate example of how housing protections are needed to preserve affordable housing and keep
people housed. Protections not just for mobile home parks, but all types of housing.

While we don’t know what will happen next, we’ve provided some insight from our neighbors in Clallam County to our Board of County Commissioners, who have established a moratorium on

HSN ALUMNI
We bid farewell to our Network Weaver Derek Firenze this month. It was indeed a bittersweet parting as we are excited for Derek and what he’ll bring to his new role at Cascade Community
Connections <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=3c3ea619b1&e=b56e9d81e8> , but sad to loose him as part of our trio. Our
working relationship had developed into the right balance of productivity, trust, and fun; if we were a band our name would be Liz Revord and the Rockin’ ‘Ricks, we’d sing covers of
Willie Nelson duets, and not be embarrassed to cry on stage.
Derek will join the ranks of other HSN Alumni who continue to do important and meaningful work for our community. Let’s use this opportunity to see where past HSN employees are at now.

Connecting Local Workforce with Local Housing
Our Housing Link project <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=e7d2b3d7a5&e=b56e9d81e8> is an effort to introduce Home Seekers
in the workforce with Home Providers in Jefferson County.
In the spotlight today is:
Alexandra
Short Story: I'm a 35 year old, mature and responsible individual trying my best to build a career and stable life for myself. I moved here from Olympia in 2021 to attend Port Townsend
School of Woodworking for 9 months. Soon after completing my education, I accepted a job at PTSW, allowing me to continue building my skills while channeling my passion for Woodworking
into creating and facilitating the best possible environment for learning Woodworking. While I haven't been in Port Townsend long, this work is incredibly important to me, and my goal
is to stay here and continue my journey towards becoming a professional woodworker. My mother, who currently lives in Aurora Colorado, is showing signs of dementia and is losing her
current housing. My brother, who she lives with, has struggled to find employment and is being evicted. I need to find a place i can afford where my mother and I can comfortably live
together, so I can take care of her and know that she is safe. In the long-term, we are looking for a 2 bedroom rental. In the short term, I am looking for a cabin or ADU with electricity,
plumbing, heat, and a proper bathroom for my mother to live in until we find something else. My current living space is scarcely larger than a full size mattress and my toilet is a
bucket- woefully inadequate for me, let alone a 62 year old woman. As a family, we badly need to get into a better situation.
Seeking: Rental, Home-share or Room for Rent, Temporary Residence (1 - 3 months) Location: Anywhere in East Jefferson County Tenants: 2 Number of Bedrooms: Studio, 1, 2 Pets: One dog,
lab mix. Mature and well behaved. Occupation: Shop Tech at Port Townsend School of Woodworking. What makes you a great tenant?: I hate this question. People deserve to live indoors
simply for being human. However, I am respectful of my living space and do my best to have a low impact on my home and the environment. I have a growing number of handy skills and will
repair things myself when possible. My dog will offer a sense of security on the property while bringing a smile with his joyful antics. My mother, who is not able to work and spends
much time at home, will gleefully tend and improve (with permission) any gardens or landscaping. But most importantly, we will fill your living space with life, as was intended. Target
