SFS:
ICYMI, at the November 12, 2024, meeting of the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC)***, it was announced by the Jefferson County Public Works department that Jefferson
County will stop all** self-haul recycling at the end of 2025.
The only way for county residents to recycle anything will be to pay a “commercial hauler” (e.g., DM Disposal or Waste Management) for curbside service.
The cost for such a service will be unaffordable for a very large number of county residents; the number of students who are on free/reduced meal programs in the PT and other school
districts in the county should give you an idea for how widespread this problem will be.
Even if people can afford the hundreds of dollars for curbside pickup service, many who live on narrow private roads will find that they can’t get that service because the garbage trucks
won’t go down their roads. So, no recycling at all for them.
Because of the county’s new policy, most recyclable materials will go straight to the landfill.
Please let your fellow students throughout the county know about this and contact the BoCC to let them know that their new policy is contrary to a fundamental principle on which your
organization is based.

** The first phase of this change in policy will be seen on December 1 (2 weeks from now) when the county will no longer recycle glass.
*** A recording of the BoCC meeting is available on the county website. The discussion about Solid Waste starts at around 3:00 pm.
