Don’t Get Political
An Open Letter to our Community,
It’s been two weeks, and in every space I’ve attended, I continue to hear the same stern, but polite request: Don’t Get Political. (This isn’t always directed to me (!), but a general
request across our community).
The ask can be considered a boundary, a request by our friends, family, and neighbors, to give them a break from the noise, the advertisements, and heated conversations. And while for
the most part, I always want to honor the requests of others, I kindly resist this notion when it comes to housing. In fact, we should always find ways to ‘be’ political.
Earlier this year I was a part of a panel discussion held by the Jefferson County Association of Realtors. There was diversity on the panel- realtors, economists, housing providers,
and myself representing HSN. When a panelist had made the statement that, “Housing wasn’t political before the 1970’s” I once again had to kindly disagree.
While access to housing, under the International Human Rights Law, is deemed a protected human right, in practice it has been treated as a commodity. When you commodify a human right-
water, housing, healthcare- it becomes political.
In the 1970’s, we saw legislation expand the rights of women, minorities, and LGBTQ+ folks to homeownership (though the ramifications of former housing policies still linger today, especially
on People of the Global Majority, or BIPOC folks). I reminded the speaker of this truth: until housing isn’t treated as a commodity, it will always remain political.
Concerned that people would be tired of politics this month, I called Eric, asking if we should cancel our Housing Happy Hour. “People will be too hungover- emotionally, physically,
mentally” I said. Whether excited or nervous for change, I knew many of us are tired. And Eric, the stabilizing force that he is, had to remind me - Change happens first at home - and
I think we all need to take that to heart. In this moment, in this community, and in this work. And sure enough, y’all turned out for housing conversations that night. It was a great
example to me that we are not alone.
In our survey response, we learned that 1 in 3 respondents don’t feel secure in their housing. As one of HSN’s five pillars, advocacy plays a role in making change at home. Eric mentioned
in last month’s newsletter that we are on a ‘Road Tour’ of sorts, sharing a 20 min presentation of our survey results. If you’re interested in hosting us, please check out our Community

estimated that conducting, analyzing and presenting the survey cost HSN about $55,000, so we need your help now more than ever. Help support us with an end of year gift, no matter what
size donation, your contribution helps us stay political <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=6ab343bad3&e=cbc38cef46> -
shaping our housing policy of the future.
Being ‘political’ can happen in many ways- we hope you and yours find ways to be active in your own community. Please join the ranks of HSN’s changemakers today.

is live! We surveyed almost 1,000 individuals and employers across Jefferson County in an effort to better understand our community housing needs and inform policy, development, and
funding priorities.
Here you can find:
* an overview of the project
* a recording of our initial presentation
* accompanying slide deck
* digital copies of our data heavy storyboards.
Be on the lookout for our final report, which will be a comprehensive presentation of our findings. We are very proud of this project and the impact it will have for our community but
it has had some hard costs and consumed a lot of staff time. Any contributions to further this and future community based projects is much appreciated, and can be directed through our

Can I Get an Encore, Do You Want More?
Our initial presentation last month was well received, and we were excited to walked away with a list of followup collaborations. With this project spanning back over a year it feels
good to deliver on meaningful results for our community. Especially for a project that was rooted in, and relied heavily on, community participation for success. But community participation
has always been and will remain core to HSN’s operation.
So far we have been in collaboration with the following organizations:
* Port Townsend City Council
* Jefferson County Planning Commission
* Jefferson Community Foundation Board
* Housing Fund Board
* OlyCAP
* WA Department of Commerce
* Economic Development Council Board
* Port Townsend Kiwanis Club
* KPTZ
* Usawa Consulting
Our Director Liz even had an opportunity to present a high level recap with Steve Tharinger and Mike Chapman this week — our State District 24 Legislators. (She made sure to also plug
rental unit protections and creating permanently affordable housing!) Both are looking forward to receiving the final report.
However, we aren’t done yet. We want to continue leveraging our findings toward housing solutions in our community. If you have a lead on other groups that could benefit from this data
and analysis please submit an inquiry using the presentation request form <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=144a799659&e=cbc38cef46>
