In the Matter of Closing County
Administrative Offices at Noon
on Christmas Eve

RESOLUTION NO.
82-08
WHEREAS, Jefferson County has had a tradition of allowing its employees to leave work
early on Christmas Eve to enjoy time with their families; and
WHEREAS, historically there are few, if any, business transactions conducted with the
public in the afternoon hours of Christmas Eve; and
WHEREAS, in order that all employees who may wish to, are given the opportunity to
participate in this tradition; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of County Commissioners that all
Jefferson County facilities may close for business beginning at noon on December 24, 2008.
County facilities include: all County Offices at Castle Hill, County Roads, County Public Works,
Sheriff Administration and the Courthouse; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that all employees, with the exception of those
departments that are required to provide services on a 24 hour a day basis, may be relieved from
work at noon and take paid time off (compensatory time, vacation). If an employee has no paid
time due, they may take time off without payor with the approval of their supervisor, continue to
work for the balance of their normal shift; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that notice of said closure will be published in the Port
Townsend Leader on December 10 and 17, 2008 and posted on the public access doors to
affected County facilities.

Description --
A brief description of the agenda item.
A Resolution directing that all County administrative offices at Castle Hill (Health,
Community Development and Public Works), the Public Works Shops (Port Hadlock,
Quilcene, Brinnon and the West End), Sheriffs Administration and the Courthouse be
closed to the public at Noon on December 24, 2008 so that employee who wish to are
given the opportunity to enjoy the holiday season with their families.
II.
Issues --
A short outline of the major issues or areas that should be
given particular attention.
The importance of family time during the holiday season has been recognized by the
County for many years. Historically there have been few, if any, business transactions in
the afternoon of December 24 and County office have been closed to the public at noon
to allow employees who wish to leave the time to prepare for their holiday celebrations.
For employees who wish to leave at Noon they will either use their paid time off
(vacation or comp time), time off without pay, or with the approval of their supervisor
they may stay and work until the normal end of their shift.
III. Action --
What is the nature of the action the Board is being asked to
take (discussion, approval of a contract, support for a grant, etc.).
