Subject: Jefferson County Shoreline Master Plan
This is to urge the Jefferson County Planning Commission to amend the current
preliminary draft shoreline master plan to prohibit mining activities on the shoreline
of Hood Canal and any other shore of state-wide significance within the County's
jurisdiction.
The entire Hood Canal shoreline is designated as a "Shoreline of State-Wide
Significance. "
Intensive land uses or developments within the shoreline of Hood Canal should be
discouraged or prohibited. It is difficult to perceive a use more intensive and
incompatible with the present shoreline and aesthetics of Hood Canal than.the
construction proposed by Fred Hill Materials. The pier, conveyor and barge facility
will intrude upon the magnificent grandeur that is now existent, converting the
natural characteristics and beauty of the existing shoreline into one marred by this
proposed industrial enterprise.
Hood Canal remains a pristine waterway, virtually void of commercial shipping of
any kind. It's shoreline is not yet marred by industrialization. We should not allow
private interests, whose motives are purely financial, to destroy this gift of nature.
