Dear Jefferson County Planning Commission,
I strongly urge you to incorporate wording into the shoreline master plan
that would protect the the Hood Canal against mining activities and other
large industrial activities.
In addition to all of the valid questions about potential environmental
damage, I would like you to consider the aesthetic degradation that
occurs when an area is industrialized. I have three simple questions:
1. Is this legacy of greed really the message we want to send to ou'r
children and grandchildren? Do we have a responsibility to those
who come after us to preserve natural beauty, or can we think only
of ourselves?
2. Will our descendants be proud that we squeezed out a few more
dollars from the earth for our benefit, at the expense of their
enjoyment of the magnificent splendor that is the Hood Canal?
3. Is it "progress" to allow industrialization of the Hood Canal? Does
human fulfillment arise from "progress" or rather from beauty,
grace, humility, finding causes greater than ourselves, and reaching
out to our fellow human beings?
In man's sad stumble through the centuries, we have made a staggering
number of bad decisions. Now you get to decide: do you allow the
predatory self-interest of a powerful few trump the legitimate interests of
the majority? Should you forfeit beauty and grandeur in favor of riches
for the already wealthy?
I hope you make the right decision.
Sincerely,
Philip D. Hansten
