The entire Hood Canal has been designated as a "Shoreline of State-Wide Significance" and is known nationally as one of the "last best places". Unfortunately, as We know you are aware, the ecosystem is always in delicate balance and we urge that the sort of activities utilized by mining activities not be permitted to pose the risk of a "tipping point" toward marine ecological degradation. We have participated with others in multiple citizen and governmental efforts since the early 1970's which have resulted in Hood Canal being, although threatened, in far better shape than much of Puget Sound. We are grateful to the County for its past endeavors to assure the continued health of Hood Canal and urge the continuation of good ecological stewardship. The intensive use required by mining and barging is incompatible with both the history and future of efforts to assure that Hood Canal survives and nutures all of us with its grandeur and environmental bounty. We urge you to not allow industrialization of this national treasure and to prohibit mining activities along the shoreline of Hood Canal and any other shoreline of state-wide significence within the County's jurisdiction. Sincerely, Drs. Margo and Tom Wyckoff Sea beck, Washington. 1/28/2009
