The entire Hood Canal shoreline is designated as a "Shoreline of State-Wide Significance. " Previous attempts to permit such an operation met with the action being overturned by the Shorelines Hearings Board which stated that: "Intensive land uses or developments within the shoreline of Hood Canal, a shoreline of state-wide significance, should be discouraged or prohibited. It is difficult to perceive a use more intensive and incompatible with the present shoreline and aesthetics of Hood Canal than the construction proposed by the Company. The pier, conveyor and barge facility will intrude upon the magnificent grandeur that is now existent, converting the natural characteristics and beauty of the existing shoreline into one marred by this proposed industrial enterprise. " We should be even smarter and wiser today as we witness the massive expense required to clean up the rest of puget Sound. Hood Canal remains a pristine waterway, virtually void of commercial shipping of any kind. It's shoreline is not yet marred by industrialization. We should not allow private interests, whose motives are purely financial, to destroy this gift of nature. 1/28/2009 Page 2 of2 Please amend the current preliminary draft shoreline master plan to prohibit mining activities on the shoreline of Hood Canal and any other shoreline of state-wide significance within the county's jurisdiction.
