Much as the avid preservationalists would wish it, we cannot turn back the clock.
The vision of "a shoreline devoid of habitation" as stated by one of them clearly shows
How out oftouch they are with reality. (yes I can verify this)
Some of the obvious flaws in the proposed Shoreline management act
1. HOOD CANAL. Is possible that you have forgotten that it too lies in Jefferson County?
Why on earth would you designate it as suitable for industrial use suitable for piers and
mining when there is absolutely no benefit to us. Not to mention the danger to the canal of
Invasive species, oil pollution, diesel noise and worse.
Also, as gateway to the whole peninsula, the inevitable bargelbridge "incident" could be
the end of Port Townsend's tourist industry once and for all.
2 The 100' setback is a fine idea - but only if current owners of single lots are given the
option of building under the current rules prior to a certain date. They have been and are
paying taxes on a build able lot. Existing buildings must be protected from erosion in an
eco friendly manner. New systems are currently under development, encourage them.
3 Condemnation of property (because that's what it is) after a fire, earthquake etc. is not
only unconstitutional, it is heartless, and cruel. You may want to consider Port Townsend
and how it would look over time with periodic gaps like missing teeth in the downtown
area. What about the Mill? Or is just single residence owners that would bear the brunt ?
4 Beach access. The stated purpose is to enCourage public access to all beaches. A goal
I whole heartedlyendorse. In my opinion there should be no private beaches and all
should be public. Never the less, I fail to see how denying owners access to their own
property in anyway benefits either the environment or the public.' (How is one to clean the
beach of the detritus that comes ashore? Rappel down a rope?) Let them build a stairway
within the guide lines.!
Other Issues to be aware of
1. No matter how noble the cause, Citizens have rights and there are laws to protect
those rights. They will sue and the county will spend years in litigation.
2. In addition to the costs of law suites the tax base would be greatly diminished because
tax payers are going to balk at paying taxes for property over which they have no
control.
3. Loose the bridge and the whole ,Peninsula sinks with it. Pit to Pier is a disaster waiting
to happen. What if our neighboring counties sued us for lack of foresight when we are
all cut offwithout warning?
We respectfully ask that you put yourselves in a mode offoresight and vision.
Respecting all life: -Animal- Vegetable-Marine and Human.
Strike a compromise between fanaticism and normal folks.
By considering the far reaching effects of your actions and adjusting the document appropriately
you will fulfill your duty to represent the citizens of this county and possibly the state.
An Awesome responsibility. Please do it well.
Thank You
