I was just alerted to your Shoreline Master Plan update draft. It permits mining activities, including conveyor belts, piers, and barges on the conservancy shoreline of Hood Canal. The entire Hood Canal shoreline is designated as a "Shoreline of State-Wide Significance." While blatantly illegal, this draft would clearly send the message that Jeff Co officials' statements re stewardship for Hood Canal are merely pretense. Back in the 1970's Mason County issued a permit for mining at the mouth of the Hamma Hamma River. This action was overturned by the Shorelines Hearings Board which stated that: "Intensive land uses or developments within the shoreline of Hood Canal, a shoreline of state- wide significance, should be discouraged or prohibited. It is difficult to perceive a use more intensive and incompatible with the present shoreline and aesthetics of Hood Canal than the construction proposed by the Company. The pier, conveyor and barge facility will intrude upon the magnificent grandeur that is now existent, converting the natural characteristics and beauty of the existing shoreline into one marred by this proposed industrial enterprise." We should be wiser today as we see the huge expense for Puget Sound clean up. Hood Canal remains a pristine waterway, virtually void of commercial shipping of any kind. Its shoreline is not yet marred by industrialization. We should not allow private interests, whose motives are purely financial, to destroy this gift of nature. Please amend the current preliminary draft shoreline master plan to prohibit mining activities on the shoreline of Hood Canal and any other shoreline of state-wide significance within the county's jurisdiction. 1/28/2009
