Voters of Jefferson County sent a clear mandate when they voted out of office commissioners who were in favor of the industrial development of the Hood Canal shoreline. A great deal of time, effort and money is being spent to clean up Puget Sound. The health of Hood Canal is a big factor in these effo rts. I grew up in Michigan. My family vacationed on Lake Huron. have first hand knowledge of the visual blight and noise polution the pier at Alabaster, Michigan causes. When ships are being loaded with crushed mineral, the noise carries a great distance! The way is clear, there, for ships to dock at the pier. There is no bridge to contend with. The Hood Canal is a different story. The Hood Canal bridge is an important link between the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas - important to commerce, tourism, and commuters whose livelihoods depend on it. The Hood Canal waterway is critical to the Navy and our national defense. It doesn't make sense to allow a large commercial shipping operation to be built there, except to the few who will benefit from it financially. The purported jobs that will be "created" will be negligible, compared with the negative aspects of the operation. Kitsap County Commissioners have voiced their 1/28/2009 Page 2 of2 opposition, along with many citizens of both Kitsap and Jefferson Counties. Allowing the current mining operation to extend to the shoreline of the Hood Canal will set a dangerous precedent for future development. Hood Canal is not just a Jefferson County issue. The quality of the Hood Canal affects all of the surrounding counties. We're all in this together. Sandra Bullock 1968 NE Lind Ct.
