Shoreline Master Plan

Dear Planning Commission,
In reference to the updating of the Shoreline Master Plan, I urge the Commission not
to permit mining activities, including conveyor belts, piers and barges, on the shorelines
of Hood Canal.
Although not a resident of Jefferson County, I would be adversely affected by the
proposed Fred Hill pier project. I live in Lofall, across the canal from the proposed
project. As I am sure you know how noise travels across water, the noise from the
loading of rock would adversely affect my home.
Similarly, me and my family's beach walks and kayak paddles would be affected. Also, my
frequent travels to Jefferson County to visit friends. shop, eat in resturants and enjoy
the outdoors would be distressed by more frequent closings of the Hood Canal Bridge for
barge traffic.
Another concern is that I have shellfished and crabbed the shorelines at Shine land
State Park and William Hicks Park. I am concerned for these public areas as I know the
possibility of pollution and invasive marine species that ships and barges used in the
pier project may bring to these areas.
I urge the Planning Commission to change the current preliminary draft shoreline
master plan so that mining activities are not allowed on the shorelines of Hood Canal.
Sincerely,
Bruce Gundersen
