Operations on the scale advocated by Fred Hill Materials are incompatible with the goal of preserving of cleaning up and preserving the health of Hood Canal, its marine diversity, its recreational value and its appeal to tourism. Establishing a major marine shipping operation just upstream of the Hood Canal Bridge is also an unacceptable threat to this important lifeline between Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula, threatening the livelihoods of all who depend on this vital link. Voters of Jefferson County sent a clear message when they voted out of office previous commissioners who were considered too closely aligned with Fred Hill Materials management. An industrial marine port and gravel barging operation in order to facilitate a huge expansion of gravel mining operations runs counter to the expressed wishes of as clear majority of residents in Jefferson County, as well as in other counties surrounding Hood Canal. The future of Hood Canal is of great concern to all who share this priceless natural resource. The Hood Canal waterway is also critical to the Navy and our national defense. While a few will benefit financially, the purported jobs that will be "created" will be negligible compared with the negative aspects of the operation. Kitsap County Commissioners and legislators have consistently voiced their opposition, along with many citizens of both Kitsap and Jefferson Counties. Allowing the current mining operation to extend to the shoreline of the Hood Canal will set a 1/29/2009 Page 2 of2 dangerous precedent for future development. Hood Canal is not just a Jefferson County issue. The quality of the Hood Canal affects all of the surrounding counties. We are all in this together. Gene Bullock 1968 NE Lind Ct.
